Re: Sherm's family's new skoolie!
Scott,
The frig in our fifth-wheel is typical of what most RV's have. It can run on AC, propane, and 12V DC. It's not quite as large as a frig one would have in a home, but it's adequate. Our's was made by Dometic.
If you are only going to use the frig while connected to shore power a household frig would be fine, but it would be tough to do any traveling with. I am sure an RV frig like ours would cost more than a basic household frig, but I bet you could find one at a good price somewhere.
Your bus looks great. I will check in often.

A household fridge works just fine in an RV. We have bounced an under counter 110vAC fridge and an under counter 110vAC freezer up and down the roads, mostly primary highways since 2006. We fulltime in an RV. Sometimes we run the units off the generator, sometimes we run down the road with no power. They will stay cold/frozen for up to 10 hours with no problem. I know several coach converters and RVers who have household units in their rigs. No problem. not like with the 3way RV units. Those things are dangerous. When we were in Corpus Christi, We watched what was left of an RV being pulled off Flour Bluff which was where we were staying. The area where the refrigerator was located, was pretty much gone (you can tell where the vents are... burnt to a crisp).

Re: Sherm's family's new skoolie!
Nice bus, great start and great crew! Looks like mom is getting washed along with the bus?
Just curious...how did the MPs react when you started driving in and out the gate? They will be surprised to see it when it's done. You may create a couple more skoolies.
Thanks to you and your family for your service. Best wishes and good luck with your bus and post-service life.

How did you get your wife to agree to the full time skoolioe living plans? My wife isn't even interested in weekend camping once I get one, but I'm still moving forward with my dream.

I bought my bus last fall, but due to snow, I couldn't bring it home until this May. I have talked about this bus everyday, for months, when I finally brought it home she freaked. "what is THAT doing here in front of the house....one week and it has to go..etc" After explaining my plan of fulltiming within 5 years for the umpteenth time, she agreed I can keep it a little longer. Well to make a long story short, once she saw the bunk, table, futon and kitchen coming together, (without her help or input) she is completely sold. (of course it helps when her friends come down for "bus parties" and tell her how cool it is) Now she's pushing for a 2 year plan. So hang in there, she'll get the bug. Cheers

Re: Sherm's family's new skoolie!
I went with 32" wide mattresses which, after 4 years underway, I found are wide enough for comfort. That would give you 2' passage.
