We actually did have a huge franklin cast iron stove as our only heat when I was a kid. house was built in 1920. No ac.

No one really had ac when I was a kid in the rural town of Center Hill. Most of the houses were built in the early 1900's.

I grew up in the Northeast, and the newest house I have lived in was built in 1925. The last 2 had been remodeled in the late 90s and had central a/c - SCORE

We got a window unit in 1986. We sat in front of it in AWE. And turned up the black and white tv, cause that window unit was a LOUD sucker!

I feel you. We had 1 window unit in my parents room. We got a fan in the window. When I got my first place I put a window unit in my bedroom.

Didn't want to start a new thresd but I have a question and I think this group can awnser it. The lower wall panels which incorporate the outer seat suppports. Are these important stuctural components? If removed, do they need to be replaced with something that would would give similar structural support. Does anybody have actual experience in this.

too many people get excited over this subject, yes you can remove this rail. the bus will not fall apart. i took that little rail out and left the remaining metal that goes to the floor so i could have a smooth surface to work with. everything is structural in a bus, the interior panels witch i also removed are the most structural part that alot of us remove. the seats are structural also, we all remove them. this is a huge steel can that can take pretty much anything you throw at it. the biggest safety issue we have is the stuff we put in the bus that will fly around in an accident, bolt it down good. ok lets hear from all the keyboard engineers! giddy up

On my ten window bus ALL the seats were four legged and mounted to the floor only.
Therefore the bus engineers did not place any structural value in the bus seats.
It does have the chair rail 12" or so above the floor.
It might improve side impact resistance a bit but does nothing for roll over integrity.

Can't wait till tomorrow- Eddie is coming back out to rock out some more bus work!
Transition will be done this weekend, and then we can focus on paneling in everything else. And I'm gonna have to get some doors and windows!!!
Still mulling over ideas for the rear of the bus. Its so far torn apart I'm really tempted to totally re skin the rear.

It's lots of flat area. Shouldn't be that hard (says the guy who never skinned a bus) lol

Being that it isn't my bus I can't be nearly as excited as you are but I really can't wait to see how this all turns out, it's looking so good

a lot of structural engineering goes into 2 areas of bus (at least as told to me years ago by the family friend that sold bluebirds).

1. rollover accidents.. can the bus hold enough of its structural integrity that occupants arent pinned between seat backs and the ceiling, or worse yet thrown out of the bus and pinned underneath it.

2. side collision accidents - can the bus take a direct hit in the gas tank and not catch fire..., can the bus take a direct collision in the side by a higher profile vehicle like a truck or another bus and not fold like a soda pop can..

and of course theres occupant compartmentalization to keep kids from flying around like books..

a motorhome has a different set of rules to go by... you dont have rows of school kids in high density in a motorhome.. so of more importance is as dave mentioned, your stuff not flying around and killing you.. a direct side collision or rolling on your lid is still of concern.. but having some deformation of your sidewalls isnt as big, so pulling the chair rail may slightly weaken the structure but may not lessen safety...

It's worth mentioning also that removal of the ledge the chairs sit on is very different to wholesale removal of the vertical metal, which is the main connector holding the walls to the floor.

Well we got the first piece of the other side of the transition on saturday and were WELL on pace to finish the blasted thing. But three hours into the day Ed starts texting someone a lot, says he's tired, and splits out.
The worst part- he casually says he won't be able to help finish till two weeks from now.
I guess I'm gona go practice welding 18ga a WHOLE LOT for a couple days and finish it my damn self.

On another note- my shorty is completely pissing me off. The right wiper runs if the engine is running. Nothing short of disconnecting it will stop it. I've got SO MANY people wanting to buy this thing from my CL ad, and now I'm in limbo. Can't seem to figure out WTF is wrong.
All in all a very disheartening weekend in Busland.

So new switch ordered for the shorty and Chris is back in FL.
I'm talking to local welding shop about coming out and doing a bit of the 18ga to finish where Eddie and I left off. Maybe by the weekend I'll have my transition covered and the shorty back to fully-functional. After looking at what bus prices are doing, we've decided we'd better keep the lil 6 window shorty. Its so damn rad! Looking forward to painting it this summer.

Things are looking better this week in Busland.
