Way too much work here.
I can't work on my bus because I'm always working.
Why do you guys have a work shortage?

In all seriousness, I do just fine odd-jobbing it.
I have a paid-for house on a nice size lot, a halfway paid for nearly new subaru, a shop full of tools and supplies, a sweet bus, a great ole lady, and I haven't missed one bill since being laid off of my job 2 years ago. I held that job for about 12 years.
I don't really miss that life, the extra money would be nice though.
I'm doin my own thing in my own time. I never turn down an honest day's work.
No one to answer to and nothing to answer for is great.
The work situation here in Florida is horrendous. When I was vacationing in Colorado last year I saw something that I haven't seen in years here- "Now Hiring" signage.
Parts of the country are suffocating. The Southeast isn't doing to well these days.
The jobs that are readily available don't pay more than 8 an hour.
But this is all going way off topic.
Anyone interested in my work and the economy feel free to PM me.

As is New Jersey. Governor Krispy Kreme's tax breaks and corporate giveaways have plunged the state to 49th in job creation, and the four casinos getting shuttered in AC didn't help the county's economy and job prospects. At least when college is session, I get my Post 9/11 GI Bill so that helps with the rent and utilities.
And back to your regularly scheduled topic...

Me too!
The first compressor I bought was a Dewalt on sale. Big mistake. Dewalt is crap these days. Sucker leaked oil before I even started it up.
Exchanged it for the Kobalt. Much better unit.
No more rattle cans, either. I finally splurged on two cheap paint guns and man has it ever made my life easier!
Gotta love tools.

IMO.
Dewalt is $hit now. They are owned by the same company as black and Decker.
A mig 140 is a bit small. A few $$ more would have gotten you a 240 volt unit. All their 240 units will still run on 120 also.
Remember, a welder is not needed to raise a roof. Your health is bad enough without welding on galvanized steel that can be riveted together.

Do you suggest bolting it together? Not welding it may be "safe enough" for normal travel, and fine compared to modern RV protection, I'd say welding is far safer if an accident were to occur. It doesn't take much to put a bus on it's side, and I'd sure hate for my roof to fall off in the process.

Last summer I picked up the Ryobi 5 piece cordless tool set that HD had and that was probably one of the best tool purchases I've made, making it handy between working on the bus and the house. And their Li batteries are awesome. They sat discharged until February, thrown on to a 6 bank charger/conditioner and fired right up and continue to hold their charge.

Welcome new member.
Here we go again.
Go back and do some reading. Look at the way the bus is put together from the factory. Down at the bottom of the chair rail is where you need to look.
The wall ribs never touch the floor ribs, and sure as hell are not welded to them.
The entire weight of the wall ribs are supported by nothing more than the rivets into the chair rail, and a few into the outside sheeting.
A armature welder welding on 16 gauge galvanized steel will do more harm to the steel than good trying to weld it.
There is nothing that would break my Bolted rib extensions.
Just for added strength, I also added por 15 paint between every one.
Por 15 paint is listed as a metal glue.
I don't take shortcuts. If welding was a better way, that's what I would have done.
Until you have taken a few buses apart to the skeleton with your hands, you may not understand.
Welding has it's place, this is not it.
This is eastcoastCB's build thread. If this topic needs to continue, I will start a thread "Welding VS Rivets".

cutting and welding galvanized steel is fine, especially OUTDOORS.But I'm glad you care so much. I have breathing protection if I REALLY need it. Why you saying I have such bad health? I think my health is doing just fine these days, thanks.
A Hobart 140 is what I wanted. I didn't want a 240v unit. I wanted a smaller, portable welder thats versatile and well supported. I got what I needed, thanks. This unit will weld ANYTHING on a bus that I need to weld and more.
You bolted yours together, I'm welding mine together. I don't wish to have a debate about which is superior, I'm doing what I know is best.
I do agree that dewalt sucks. I won't be buying anything else from them. I hate the bright yellow tools! The Kobalt is less of an eyesore and higher hp by a good bit.

I'm looking forward to close pics of the weld beads.
After all, the quality of the weld can vary so much with weather, settings, quality of welding wire, welding Gas, ect.
Will you be using flux core, or welding gas?

I dont need you to inspect my welds... thanks. I've inspected many many thousands. I'm not the best welder in the world, but I'm qualified and experienced enough.

Yes, the new tool smell is still strong in the back of my car, and has now taken over the bus, too.

Base Model Starting at:
$3,604.00
If I were made of money, I'd have one of these.
But the Handler 140 by Hobart is a VERY respected machine and will fit my needs just fine. Will be great for bus projects and trailers.
$499.99

Actually YES, that's exactly what we've been working on. At least its in the shade!
When the garage is totally cleaned out, then the VW project can continue.
It would be a lot easier if it were MY garage, but its my parents'.
