I have a box of parts in the back of my van as well, although I don't know half of them..

Progress?

So, I have been saving up and I'm at the point I need to get an engine. Is it smart to get a brand new Vortec5700 and swap it in? As opposed to say, finding one from a scrap yard.. What parts do y'all recommend to take off the old motor and salvage? And CB if you're reading this, I got a new phone.

Interesting. What year is the van?
I've not seen one that old with FI. Someone must have added it?

thgat makes no sense.. in 84, TBI was the only type of FI offered.. are you talking a TunedPort? TPI was added?

the bigger engines in 84 like the 454 still were carbed, if you put the same size and similar SPEC engine in, you move the sensors and the intake manifold over and you should be good..

87 and later engines had a few minor config changes.. the accessory bracket holes in the heads were different, so make sure on any engine you yank to put in it that the accessory holes are there in the heads.. somewhere around 87 is when they went to SERP belt which means your fan and water pump were different.. but thats just boltable acceosry changes from your old to the new if needbe.

It's a Custom so they were all custom ordered, Idk, the stamp under the hood says 350 5.7L F.I. The dude I got it from put in a 2001 Vortec 5700 TBI..

You're in custom territory, man.
If it were me, I'd rather have a regular pre-FI four bolt 350 with a carb.
What's broken on the engine that's in it?

Eustis auto says bottom end. I want to have it looked at again to make sure. I've got cash to drop right now. You know any mechanics looking for work?

If the bottom end is bad, I'd find a running longblock and swap that in.
I don't know any shops in the area, but I have a mechanic. I'll ask him if he wants to look at it. How much would Eustis Auto charge you to swap the block?

I have good reason to believe that the whole motor is likely fried. And once it gets opened up the numbers will start adding, so it'd be a better investment to just go brand new..? I'm not to keen on Eustis Auto, haven't heard too much good..

I'd find a complete, running, used engine.
I've seen your van and its rad, but no way I'd sink the kind of money to put a brand new engine in it.
You can get the longblock rebuilt for around a thousand bucks. That's better than throwing thousands into a new engine.

Like I said the motor is likely shot top and bottom, it's been all sorts of used and abused. I have the money for a new motor from Summit shipped to door for 2k. This week I will have a down-payment and next week I'll have the rest.
