Re: "Rufus"

Mechanic incorrect...

12 volt system. Fired it up today, lots of smoke till warmup, been sitting over a month.

Is it normal to have a little smoke coming from the oil dipstck well after warm up? Less than a cigarette at rest.?

Spent hrs figuring how to licence, insure, and drive w/o CDL. legally Insurance says it is still a commercial vehicle. They insure by weight.
DMV says State cops have to inspect to change to RV (after meeting criteria).
Transit permits for WA $5
Trip permits are $27
Of course I live 15 miles from anything...

Anyway, preliminary floor plan... still want to add bunks/storage somewhere...

Re: "Rufus"

Normal for average 3208 to smoke upon start up. After all, they aren't new engines. Second, it is not good to start it up and then shut if off with the oil in the pan cold. This information is on the Cat website. On my 3208. if i am going to start it after doing some work on it, and am not going to drive the bus, i always let it run for half an hour to warm it up. I have found that it will not smoke neary as much if it has been properly warmed up the last time i ran the engine. I also make sure that I let it run at idle for about three minutes before shut down.
If you have a ton of smoke coming from dip stick tube that might indicate worn rings...

Re: "Rufus"

Chev49, I wish I had remembered to let my motor idle for a few minutes before I shut it off on my last road trip. I think, because I did not do that, It did not want to start up again.

I wrote about that on my thread. I will remember to do that next time.

I ran it for about 25 min, did not move it, then shut it down. I was verifying battery condition.
It smokes alot when it first started after sitting for a month...
After warm up, not so much. Thx for the response.

Any need to add enzymes to a partial tank if the air is (Eastern WA) dry?
Common sense says do it anyway...

Re: "Rufus"

I like your layout sketch. I am going to steal a lot of it for mine. I will probably switch places on the cooktop and the refer just so I can more easily ventilate the back of my propane fridge (and make it easier to get a beer while I am sitting on the couch).
Thanks for posting.

Re: "Rufus"

RE: Bus to RV registration requirements Washington State.

This is the info WA State 'Equipment Division' sent me today, thought I would share:

From: Equipment

January 4, 2012

This is in response to your inquiry.

Below is the RCW Definition of a motor home. In order to be licensed as a motor home it must meet these qualification.

RCW 46.04.305

Motor homes.

"Motor homes" means motor vehicles originally designed, reconstructed, or permanently altered to provide facilities for human habitation, which include lodging and cooking or sewage disposal, and is enclosed within a solid body shell with the vehicle, but excludes a camper or like unit constructed separately and affixed to a motor vehicle.

Once the conversion is complete contact the Department of Licensing for title change and registration.

At that time DOL will determine if an inspection is required. If it is requires, you can find information regarding the inspection and a list of our inspection locations on our Web site at http://www.wsp.wa.gov/traveler/vinspect.htm.

Hopefully this provides the information and clarification you needed. If you have additional questions about the licensing and reclassification of the vehicle please feel free to contact DOL directly at (360) 902-0122 or titles@dol.wa.gov.

Thank you for your inquiry.

Sincerely,

Equipment
