Re: Searching for the nebuchadnezzar

Hi,

Question regarding generators:
Is it safe to install non RV specific generators in a compartment in the bus (outside, underneath) as long as it is vented?

Thanks,
Tom

Re: Generator.

I've been considering the same (I have a Powermate genny). Feedback I've received so far ranges from no way in H. E. double toothpicks (from the genny manufacturer) on one hand, to "add a fan and port the exhaust out the back" on the other.

I plan to install my generator as far towards the back of the bus as I can in a custom built under-floor exterior vented compartment, with sound insulation and a fan that will operate automatically when the generator is running. I'll weld on an oversize exhaust pipe (spark arrester not needed if pipe is long enough) and run it out the back or side, and line it up with a DIY Genturi to take the exhaust up above the roof line in back of the bus. I'm either going to have to put the unit on slide rails so that I can access the top mounted gas tank, or remove that tank and rig up a larger remote tank with fuel pump. I think the remote tank would be far safer with the generator operating in an enclosed space. Don't want to risk overheating the fuel.

Mounting any generator needs proper exhausting. Regardless if it is an "rv" model or not. Get it as far away from the windows as possible and add a co2 detector as well. You don't need an er visit for monoxide poisoning!!!!

Re: Searching for the nebuchadnezzar

Well thankfully the duplicate title for the bus (The Nebuchadnezzar) I'm buying is supposed to come in this week! There is something that I'm not clear on: I will have house batteries and an inverter/ charger because I'm installing solar panels, for times when I would be connected to shore power would I be wanting to run 12v from a converter or would I run the 12v directly from the batteries? I can't seem to find the answer to this little question where ever I look.
Thank you

Re: Searching for the nebuchadnezzar

I run my 12v stuff from the batteries via a fuse box. I use the converter to charge the 12v batteries. The converter is powered by either shore or genny power. My converter is a 45 amp "Intell" "smartcharger" and so far it has done what is supposed to do. I'm sure you know this, but if you have an inverter (12v to 120v) don't use it to power your converter (120v to 12v) because it falls into the TANSTAAFL category Jack

Re: Searching for the nebuchadnezzar

Hi All,
Well still waiting for the Nebuchnezzar, seems that when First Student bought Laidlaw problems with bus titles occurred. So after over a month of waiting the fleet sales lady in Texas finally tracked someone down at CT DMV that says she can help with these affected buses and hopefully the Neb will have a title in about 2 weeks, UGH!
Anyway, I've seen Dickinson heaters that are designed for marine use being used in tiny houses and I was wondering if any of you use these heaters? I've seen them available in both propane and diesel. Seems like it could be a nice match for us diesel folks.

Don't own one but I've been on sev eral boats that had marine diesel heaters. Worked great and was surprised at no diesel smell. The marine units are typically $$$$$$.

Re: Searching for the nebuchadnezzar

The early versions were great engines with good power, torque, and fuel economy.

The later smogged versions has a lot of issues, so many that M-B decided it wasn't worth the effort to get the engine to comply with the newer emissions standards.

Parts and pieces can be difficult to find locally. Most of the time you will need to wait for parts to come from the national distribution center.

Re: Searching for the nebuchadnezzar

On your electrical questions you might go to www.rvtechmag.com and check out their tech section on electrical. What you will want is a automatic charge controller which can take the output from your solar, shore power or alternator and maintain your batteries at proper charge. Magnum makes an inverter charger combo that will sense which item is being used for charging automatically. Some of the better charge controllers can produce regulated 12 volt power out of solar panels up to 42 volts. HTHs

Re: Searching for the nebuchadnezzar

Laidlaw purchased hundreds of the IC RE buses with the T444(E).

It is okay for a route bus but is woefully underpowered out on the highway and on any kind of hill.

Since you have the E version there aren't a lot of upgrades you can do to your engine to get more go out of it.

Some of the Banks Engineering upgrades for the Ford Powerstroke will work on your engine including chips and turbo's if your engine does not have a turbo.
