Re: Senza Legno, Senza Pontilli
Once again my one day off & it's pouring outside
If I tried loosening the tarps the wind would probably carry them for a 100 miles

Re: Senza Legno, Senza Pontilli
I just got back to checking the skoolie site and finaly caught up with my backlog reading. I finaly got to see your roof raise. Nice, I like it better than mine. I like how you kept the back attached. Sorry to hear about your welder and back. My welder gave out too, but it gave me a reason to buy an better welder.

Thanks, I thought it would a lot easier & less time consuming making 1 cap instead of 2 & easier to skin.

What are your thoughts on needing cross bracing?
& I'm trying to load pic's but it says board quota has been reached?

If we had raised our roof a couple feet, maybe you would need cross bracing. My bus had bracing between the supports above the windows. I just re-attached them after the raise. After the sheet metal was riveted on, it is very secure.

I understand what your saying what I was referring to was adding cross bracing to the fwd supports I welded in, I tried to load some pics but the sight won't let me

Re: Senza Legno, Senza Pontilli
The easiest way to post pics is to take Nats' offer. Or you can post your pics to a photo hosting website such as imageshack [the one I recommend because it's cheap at $1.00/month/unlimited uploads] and once uploaded copy the "img" file and paste it into your thread here.

Re: Senza Legno, Senza Pontilli
I have a 120 volt Hobart unit, I bought it in 8th grade (200 ; I think it is discontinued now. It is a 125 amp unit, and I can weld 3/16 steel all day, no problem, on flux core wire. Definitely worth buying a name brand unit, don't waste your time on a harbor freight or other cheap unit. I've paid no attention to duty cycles ever and 6 years later it still works great.

I think this is the closest thing to what I have.

Re: Senza Legno, Senza Pontilli
Best upgrade for a cheap welder [other than a new bigger one] is to add a fan to the back. I saw this done on a small lincoln, I think a weldpac 100. Also make sure you are not getting too much voltage drop, make sure you use the largest extension cord with the shortest run you can find.
I like what you're doing with the bus. Are you planning for glass for the front?

Re: Senza Legno, Senza Pontilli
Hard to go wrong between Lincoln, Miller or Hobart migs --- Avoid the cheap Chinese crap like the plague. I absolutely LOVE my little dual voltage 140 Millermatic. Plenty of power for what I do. Hooked up to 220, that little sucker can lay down an amazing bead. The job I bought it for involved a couple of critical joints between 1/4" plate and 8" schedule 40 pipe. Came out looking like a "real welder" had done the job. Good thing because the finished work weighed well over 4,000 pounds and had to be craned out of my shop and installed on location with all the weight supported by those two weld joints. Great penetration & control. I liked it so much I bought a second one for my "other" shop.
BTW...Miller & Hobart are both made by the same company with the Hobart being slightly less money due to a few shortcuts here & there. However, I just read that they have recently changed their drive system to all metal (instead of plastic) so they should be a great value these days.

Thanks Richard, If by glass you mean windows the answer is no, if you mean fiberglass then the answer is yes 'm planning on fiberglass BUT while I was doing the raise a guy who lives down the street came by & introduced himself & told me he works in a sheet metal shop & would love the opportunity to build a cap for me, if he comes thru then it will be metal if not fiberglass,

Re: Senza Legno, Senza Pontilli
Aint this a b(%#h, I have 12 volts to the drive motor so I figure the motor must be bad so I take it apart get the motor out & hook it up to a battery & it works,so I put it back in the welder & it works again so I'm going to finish putting it together & carry on,, hopefully except I promised the wife I'd do something with her this afternoon so another weekend of getting nothing accomplished
