Glad to hear you are manually priming, as starters and batteries get pricey. Sometimes it's the return lines that let air in the system, common on 7.3 idi motors. Even those manual pump-style primers have a diaphragm that goes bad with the blended diesel they use today.

I had to replace all my fuel lines on 2003 bus, they were cracked, swollen and generally unhappy from blended diesel.

Could be. I was told by the bus barn guy that mine would lose it's prime sitting for long periods of time. I did find fuel lines leaking on the trip home. The lines between the fuel filter and lift pump were dry cracked very bad. I took them off and made new ones with some hose and clamps to get home. I'll get hydraulic line replacements crimped on them in the future.
Honestly, any rubber fuel system part over 20 years old is suspect.

No, no, ... I don't mean ethanol. I mean ANYTHING rubber, RTV, or plastic. Suspension rubber bits will be garbage. Any kind of gasket including the windows. Any interior body panel for the plastic.

Take apart an '80s car and try to put it back together without breaking anything.

OK, I just HAD to do something on Gimel. Progress is slow due to several factors but I just had to get something done on it. I have never TIG welded aluminum before and what better thing to learn on that recycling some aluminum signs into a instrument cluster adapter for the new instrument cluster I designed for Gimel. Sorry I didn't take any more pics than these but hopefully you can see what I'm doing (don't beat me up too badly on my first attempt to weld aluminum (I had a couple low spots after sanding to fill with glazing putty later)).

To get those who didn't see it, here's a pic of the instrument cluster I'm making (that has a LOT more gauges to monitor the vehicle) to replace the nonsense thing International puts in these buses.

I started by making a plate patterned from the actual dash plate I had previously made, only 1/8" larger all around and boxed it in around the original dash.

After all the welding was done, time to cut the center out leaving a flange to attach the instrument panel.

Then drill the instrument panel and adapter, thread the holes in the adapter to attach the panel with. Screw down the panel.

When I get ready to install it, I'll have to remove the old instrument cluster, cut away the dash as needed to accommodate my gauge set and switches and mount the adapter. I'm relocating the ignition switch and air valve as well as using different light switches and dash light dimmer. AS you can see this dash gives me a lot more real estate to do things with, not to mention I'll be able to monitor:
Speed
RPM's
Air supply (Primary and Secondary)
Manifold boost pressure
Volts
Fuel tanks (both left and right)
Engine temp.
Oil Pressure.
Exhaust gas temp.
Engine oil temp
Transmission temp.
Differential temp.

Not sure if I can, but I might be able to install air pressure, oil pressure, engine temperature and transmission temp lighted alarms along the bottom edge.

Wow, that looks amazing ! Has that airplane cockpit vibe. The curve compliments the windshield and the steering wheel. Looks like a great improvement. You get to enjoy staring at that whenever you drive the beast. Well Done.

Thanks. It's a take off (pun intended

) of the old Peterbilt corvette dash. I'm even using Peterbilt vintage gauges (with the tach calibrated to my DT40

. My dad was a truck driver and this setup brings back a LOT of memories. Yea, it's gonna be fun looking over that dash driving this thing down the highway some day!!

My dad is a trucker, and nostalgia makes me want to incorporate as much class 8 stuff into my bus as I can!

One thing I like is gauges. Even if they're unnecessary. I love the plethora of them you see on older big rigs.
My new shorty has the later IC gauges that I like.

I like gauges too... granted i do mine in a more modern style with the 2 (soon to be 3) digital panels.. but i love watching gauges and seeing inside the guts of a vehicle with them.. awesome stuff..

My husband won't let me put a "phaser bank energy level" or "warp-speed capacity" indicator on my bus. The party-pooper. I think it would be cool, he thinks that would be the exact opposite...
