We bought the bus so we could take it camping and to work out of town (we're apprentice boilermakers). I'd like to transition eventually to living in it full time but I think my boyfriend will need some convincing

Found your build while searching for info on rivets, rivet guns, etc. I'm going to do a raise as well. My bus is a '99. Are your OEM hats 12 gauge? Haven't gotten the skins off mine but was told it was 14 gauge.

Being late in the fall, I chose the hottest day I could. I hung the panels at the top from two points, and allowed the sun to heat them to the point of hot to the touch. Then bolted them on.

Now, based on this experience, I would prime the panels black before bolting or riveting them on. This would have caused the sun the expand them to the maximum, before securing them to the ribs.

This would be highly effective in hotter climates, and if painting your bus a lighter color, the black will expand the steel more than the lighter, final color will.

Steel cools to fast for any artificial heating to be effective. Riveting and bolting is no fast process. Therefore I believe that using a black primer, and the heat of the sun to be the most effective method for the fellow skoolie owner.

Hope this helps others avoid wrinkles.

Too much time in isolation. I was in a single wide mobile home without water or electric for about a week before I got everything hooked up. But that wasn't thru winter and it was in FL not Canada.

It's almost like a step-by-step on how I can build what I want to build from a bus when the time comes. I might even be able to add a few extra feet to a 40ft bus based on what I see here.
