Pre-heating with a torch will help a lot. Even with something like a little propane shop unit.

Re: The Journey Visvi 1999 Thomas MVP ER
Hey Tango, your idea worked. I don't have a torch on hand so I used my heat gun. It work good.
I was hoping to get the front done today. It just keeps dragging on. I only got one side finished.
I need to cut away the excess steel and weld the frame back together.
Here is the steel cut away, I thought I took a photo of it welded too. After I welded the frame back together, I finished welding the side piece on. I also ground down the old welds and re-welded them. Then I riveted in the last of the side panels. Five hrs of work and only one side done.
I sealed all the seams with Sikaflex 221. This stuff is sticky when applying and stays flexible after it cures. Im going to prime and paint as is for now and watch it over the winter as I drive it around to see if any of my welds break. They I will fix them and do the body work in the spring, to make it pretty.

Re: The Journey Visvi 1999 Thomas MVP ER
Hey Bailey --- glad it helped. Also helps to have a heat spoon and wet rags handy when welding any sheetmetal to help dissipate excess heat. Helps prevent "oilcanning". I'm still trying to learn the right touch myself, so anyone with more experience...please...feel free to jump in here.

Re: The Journey Visvi 1999 Thomas MVP ER
You always have to be careful when using your grinder. Especially with a cutoff wheel, They can blow apart on you. I had one do that tonight while cutting the excess steel on the drivers side.
Not pretty when it happens. Not pretty when you are working close to the grinder. Lucky for me I had a couple layers of clothing on.
It still got through and did a number on my chest. Feels like someone punched me, from the kick back of the grinder.
Tomorrow we will see if I get a bruise.

Re: The Journey Visvi 1999 Thomas MVP ER
I did "bounce" test years ago (wearing old skool welding leathers etc) the black and yellow ones from lowes past the best....others were damn scary
I buy a new $20/$25 northern tool grinder every two years or so...first thing I do is throw away evrything ment to be ground/spun away...only usethe grinders
Never buy cutoff/grind wheels from the cheap places...esp...the tool shows that go to armorys etc...
I'm really liking the lines alot

Re: The Journey Visvi 1999 Thomas MVP ER
Thx for posting the pics of what happens when a zip disk explodes. I have seen it happen a few times. That's why I always wear my leather gloves, coat, and apron. Full face shield also. I find looking directly inline with your cutting wheel without the worry of sparks, allows me to cut far more accurate.

Re: The Journey Visvi 1999 Thomas MVP ER
Glad to hear you are OK and thanks for the reminder. Years back I kept an old face shield on the wall in my shop for the same purpose.
It had about a third of a seven inch cutting wheel that came apart embedded most of the way through the plastic. It had stopped about a quarter inch from my cheek and eye. Handed it off to a high school shop teacher who wanted it as a display for the kids there to think about. Hope they got the message.
Great looking build BTW. Keep the pix a comin'!

The front is all done for now. All pieces welded. Everything sealed, surface rust cleaned off, and primed. It looks much better now.

Awesome man! I love it. So are you going to slope the back, or just go straight down vertically? I think a straight drop would be fine in the back. You've proved your metal on that front angle, now you can feel free to just button that thing up and get to the interior. Fun, fun, fun!!

Going straight down on the back. I'm glad I saved the easier end for last. I can't wait to get back to working on the inside.
