I guess old Skoolies never die--they just park somewhere else.

And Elliot, thanks for the 43 pages.

Thanks Elliot for chronicling your bus project; it has been a great inspiration for me and I'm sure many others. Even though I did not go the roof-raise route, your work empowered me to see that anything can be done!

Ditto the others, Elliot: Thanks for all you've contributed!

Many, including myself, have been inspired by The Millicent Chronicles (and your kinetic sculptures, among other things). It's truly been a tremendous ride!

Yer still a skoolie at heart, so don't be a stranger and share some of your other projects if you find the time. Heh, who knows...they could provide inspiration too!

Either way, best wishes and fare well!

Elliot,

Having a Kinetic Seer weighing in on discussions and leading by example has enriched Skoolie.net. Don't be a stranger, feel free to toss in your one-fiftieth of a US dollar from time to time.

Maybe Steve can honor your contributions by changing your rating from "Bus Crazy" to "Skoolie Seer." Here's one vote for that.

Millicent's co- roof-raiser here..I 'spect Elliot to have most of the input still on the sweet ol' bus...
I'm just keeping her in the family and available for kinetic stuff...
I've slept a couple of months in her a few days at a time..
in most of the bunks and
with other family too .

So it ain't over yet!

Re: The Millicent Chronicles; two foot roof raise, big tailg

Thank you for sharing your journey with us. You have provided a wealth of knowledge to the ones seeking it. You have defiantly helped me understand a few things and sparked an idea or two in the process. As with all things they must come to an end at some point, Hopefully this isn't the last we hear from you.

And finally as Andy Kaufman said
"Thank you very much"

I like what you're doing with Millicent. I just went through all the pages, and it's real inspiring to see the progress made. Keep up the good work.

And... "I ain't dead yet", as Glorious Kinetic Founder Hobart Brown used to say. In case you didn't realize it, "Whymcycle" is Peter. Millicent belongs to him now, but it seems I'm still the chief mechanic. So no tears, please! Millicent is still in the-closest-thing-I-have-to-family. That was the best possible solution to my need for simplifying my life.

Maybe Peter and I will drop in here once a year for an update or something. Be well, friends!

mt643 is supposed to lock in 3rd and stay locked on the 4th upshift. and the converter is supposed to stay locked on downshifts to provide engine braking, but only if your foot is off the throttle. supposed to stay locked even in 2nd gear with no throttle. the lockup clutch in a 643 has the holding power for ALL of the rated engine torque, up to 640+ ft lbs so WOT in 4th gear is a direct link through the trans. theres a stack of like 13 friction/metal plates in the converter

Re: The Millicent Chronicles; two foot roof raise, big tailg

Thanks, Craneguy01!

Oh.... And yes, I will OF COURSE drop in from time to time. Such as now.

Millicent has not actually moved. I have room, and Peter doesn't. So everything is the same, except I'm a hired hand now.

As for additional hands -- Peter & Jerri have a new baby! Three months old now, a little sister for three-year-old Sam to watch over.

No work has been done over the winter. Millicent is ready to use anytime -- just needs the antifreeze flushed out of the fresh water system. Of course, still needs paint, water heater, a couple more tanks, further fiddling with the furniture.

To shed a little bit more light on the mystery.... I've been ill for a while, which took some of the pepper out of me. Much better now! So I'll probably "bump" this thread whenever we accomplish any major work.

Thanks for all the kind words! Looks like "the 43 pages" can still be useful to new Skoolie members.

Oh... and my Kinetic Sculpture Racing page has a new home: http://kineticbaltimore.com/KSR/howto.asp

Nice to have you back here at Skoolies, Elliot, even if for only a breif appearance. Too bad about your illness, I'm happy that you're now well. It does seem like life likes to intrude into a guy's (or gal's) projects more and more the older one gets.

Re: The Millicent Chronicles; two foot roof raise, big tailg

I've been asked to " 'splain " the new paint on the front of Millicent, as seen in my signature picture below. High time I put some paint on her, eh! Well, it's only the front so far, and the door. My partly home-made tall door had bare rusty steel on it, and I couldn't stand it any longer. I did not remove the rust. Instead I treated it with phosphoric acid, sold in paint and hardware stores precisely for this purpose. Same stuff as in naval jelly and POR-15. Then I painted right over it. With time, we shall see how well this works. The paint is Ace RustStop applied with a brush.

Now I need to make a grille for that gaping vent inlet!

It took me long enough, but the vent now has a grille. Yes, it is the same material as the Peterbilt radiator grille -- from a damaged grille I scavenged a couple of decades ago.

Thankx! Certainly an argument in favor of hoarding Treasures which may come in handy one day -- provided one has enough acreage to store said Treasure, and a tolerant local Code Enforcement office allowing such hoardage.

Re: The Millicent Chronicles; two foot roof raise, big tailg

Just wanted to thank you for all the pictures!

Your lift diary IS VERY VERY good for anyone thinking about this project.

I have found several things in your thread and Randys (bus with no name...yet) that sent me in directions I would have otherwise not even considered.

Hope you are still feeling well.

PS You were not around at BM in 09...I tried to find you.

Re: The Millicent Chronicles; two foot roof raise, big tailg

Hey, thank you for the kind words!

And thank you; yes my health is all right nowadays.

We were at Burning Man in 2009, I think on either G or H between 8 and 8:30 -- thereabouts. Then in 2010 on Esplanade just past 9, set back a bit.
The year we missed was 2011.
I’m still cleaning dust from this year. Peter & Jerri did not make it, but I was definitely there. Here is a picture:

And will almost certainly be there in 2013, since I work Perimeter and thus have guaranteed entry.

Now…. Peter just took Millicent to Port Townsend, Washington, and got back to his house in Davis yesterday. He has a friend with artistic talents and there is painting now going on before we all travel to Ventura, Southern California, for the last Kinetic Sculpture Race of the year in ten days. So when Millicent gets back to my house after that, there should be something to show you.

Meanwhile, a couple of weeks ago I installed the lettering I’ve wanted for years, on the “forehead”, just above the windshield:
