Re: The Millicent Chronicles; two foot roof raise, big tailgate

The Barn is coming along, thank you, but slowly. By coincidence, I worked on it this afternoon -- just came in the house as it got dark.

All four regular walls have been skinned, and windows and doors installed. In other words, everything is done up to the 12 foot level.

I'm now working on the gable end walls (gable ends of building, above 12 feet). Much trimming to fit around the overhanging roof purlins. I could simply cut flush below the purlins, but I want the extra strength against the wind. I'll take a snapshot tomorrow, which may explain it.

I'm thinking the roof will go on quickly once I'm done fiddling with the gable walls, but... time will tell. Adding the overhangs on the roof -- as per City code requirement -- sure complicated this building something mighty. But it IS going to look cool, with a little faux hay-hood on the front end.

Re: The Millicent Chronicles; two foot roof raise, big tailgate

Here is the upper (gable) wall I installed yesterday. Four panels – each is 36 inches wide. So I have ¼ of the gable wall panels done.

But it took far too much time and work. Look at this:

There is a 3x3 inch angle for the top of the sheets to attach to, and I installed the angle on top of the purlins and trimmed the panels to reach it. Waaaayyy too much work. So from here on, I’m putting the angle below the purlins and cutting the panels along a straight line. Don’t know why I “had to” try it the hard way first, except that this is all one big fun experiment. Regardless of attachment method, it will be covered by trim and soffits.

Here is the roll-up door:

I’m very happy with this arrangement. The door rolls straight up along the structural columns, balanced by counterweights.

And here you can also see the outline of the hay hood “architectural feature”.

Barn construction resumes... now. Rain expected in a few days.

progress is looking good , continue to take your time and make it right the first time.

I wish that I could have built a taller building for the overhead storage but the local zoning made that a battle not worth dieing for.

I'd rather have gone with a larger footprint and less climbing, but I only have so much land.

A guy's gotta keep busy, I guess...
Leave some work for your volunteer lackey(s)...get the lower roof lip pieces in & we'll sail thru!
Then onto Millicent's rooftop observation deck installation...

I should explain that "Whymcycle" is my pal Peter, who helps me so much with Millicent. Yep, he does a ton of work on the Barn also.

If the rain holds off until Sunday, we should be able to perform some magic on Saturday.

OH, BY THE WAY... I did some work on Millicent today also! Those shade-supporting bows on the roof -- they needed some weather-caulking. So THERE is a legitimate, on topic, Millicent update! LOL

There:

Simplified installation, much time saved, and probably just as strong.

With this and other projects, not much will happen with Millicent until spring.

Re: The Millicent Chronicles; two foot roof raise, big tailgate

A random update.

It looks like Millicent will finally get painted/decorated this year. I will need to provide a white base coat, but then the artists will take over. At the Burning Man Art Festival, yes. Could get real weird -- which I'm looking forward to.

Meanwhile, I open Millicent's windows when the weather is dry, and close them when it rains. Risk of frost is over here, so I ought to flush out the antifreeze from the water supply and sanitize the system with chlorine. Soon.
