I have to agree with your tutor...gasless migs are a RPITA. The only benefit they have is if you have to weld in a 40 mph wind.

Also...the wire typically costs twice what gas wire does.

Hey slick, if you have an ECM on your bus, remove it prior to welding, also disconnect the batteries. They are both grounded to the frame, no need to spend more money replacing things that you didn't have to in the first place.

Did you have your state inspection yet?

Pure sine wave is the best to get. I got a 2000 w magnasine (SP) with a battery temp monitor and monitor panel. it was all together about 2 grand, but well worth it, especially on the battery temp monitor. Fry those and you could have a fire, or worse, gas in the cabin and you wouldn't know it until too late!

Thanks Doc,

I have no ECM, mine is a 1998 Cummins B5.9L which was the last year they made them without the ECM.

No state inspection yet. I have a few more things to prep and nearly 100% travel for work is slowing me down, too. When I do get I'll report the experience and outcome.

Wow, $2k for a fully loaded inverter...hadn't budgeted that much...but I understand the value proposal...

I have a line on a used 100# propane tank. Its fittings are in the top like a bbq grille tank. Can anyone tell me if there are and issues with mounting it horizontally?

Is it marked "DOT Approved"? Unless it is, you don't want to go down the road with it.

I haven't seen it yet but I did ask if it was DOT spec'd. If it is can I mount it sideways and still get all the gas out?

All LP tanks have an "UP" position and you have to stick with it if that's what you mean.

Thanks Tango, that is exactly what I mean. I figured that was the case due to the piping configuration inside but wanted to ask just the same.

Can the internal piping be redone for a horizontal installation?

Anything can be done if enough money is there to pull it off. But I would think it prohibitive in this case since the tank would have to be carefully opened, stuff relocated, then welded back up and pressure tested. Might even require an X-ray of the welds. Otherwise you would be driving a potential bomb. And at a hundred pounds...a pretty impressive one at that.

PS...I routinely see high quality DOT Manchester tanks on Ebay at discount prices. They are pretty much the gold standard for RV use and last for decades.

Yup, go for the Manchester. Before you buy a tank, make sure your local propane guy is allowed to refill it. There is a new variety of filling port required on portable propane tanks and the old style can't be refilled. The propane tank on my bus has the old school fittings but can (at least for the present) be refilled because it is permanently attached to the bus and therefore not considered portable. If you buy a new tank you will want the latest filler type I would think, but the propane provider will have all the correct answers. Jack
