Just don't dump kitty liter in a sewer. It will clog up everything in nothing flat.

Hey, the purpose of kitty litter is to deal with excrement in the most effective way possible where plumbing is not being used. It actually works quite well. So long as you "cover up" your business after you're done it really doesn't stink. I may start carrying sawdust in a seperate container to be used for soaking up the pee more effectively without adding weight.
I don't think this toilet design would work very well for fulltime use though - especially for a family. If I were fulltiming and staying at campgrounds/RV parks I would certainly go the black tank route. And I may yet decide to do that in the future, but for now I have a functional toilet for very little investment of time or money.

Point made, but I am planning longer trips, and I also may go fulltime (God willing), so I think I will stick with my tank....
Hoping you have a sense of humor, which paw do you use to "cover up" your business? Just joking Dan!
You have some great input on these pages... I still can't even decide if I want to keep my OM windows or go to RV, seems there won't be much diff other than looks.

Re: THE ORIENT EXPRESS
That orange silicone sealer on the exhaust ports on the heads won't last more than a few minutes before being burned off.
The exhaust temp is way way higher than that sealer CAN HANDLE.
Spend the money right and your labor by getting the correct exhaust gaskets.

Re: THE ORIENT EXPRESS
Greetings from a Noobie. First post
The talk of a sawdust toilet made me chime in here. Hope its not too late for some words of "experience". I drew you a picture ...
(pic deleted ... sorry.)
When you build the housing for the bucket, it is important to remember to offset the front wall of it for "heel room". Trust me, when you are negotiating the sitting down and standing up process, you will appreciate being able to get your heels farther back. On the ranch, we had two different outhouses - one with the heel room and one without. Nobody wanted to use the one without - it was just too awkward and uncomfy.
Also, you may want to consider ahead of time just how that bucket will get into and out of that cabinet. A friend had a sawdust toilet in her studio/guest house and had a drop-down front on it with a piano hinge at the floor line. The bottom of the cabinet, inside where the bucket sat, was raised up the same thickness as the hinged door so it was just a "slide in and slide out" rather than a "lift over the lip of the door" to get it out. I spose you could also make it a swinging door, too. She used to laugh about how she figured it would be cool if the bucket sat on a rail system (like a sliding drawer in a pot cupboard or on a desk keyboard shelf) so she didn't have to get down on her knees to get the bucket out. Sometimes wimmen are creative inventors .
The pretty butterfly is for folks who have sensitivities. LOL
Love this site. No bus. Have a Safari van I may live in, though.Thinking on it. Gotta get the pension first, though.
Hope this helps (and makes sense, too),
Cheers,
Gypsy

Re: THE ORIENT EXPRESS
as far as i am concerned, wal-mart sells good synthetic oil. they don't make it of course, and its been so long, i forgot where. Last year, i stopped by the place that makes oil around 70 miles from where i am (and where my dad used to buy thousands of gallons a month for resale to commercial accounts) and they still are running stuff a mile a minute, and not doing much to change from one brand to the next.
I have used wal-mart synthetic since the brought it out, except in the detroit engines which more easily can get diesel in the oil, so i wanted to keep it changed. My 4 cycle cat engine only takes something like 17 quarts, so i use synthetic and the truck z-max.
Doesn't hurt to send you oil in for testing either...even in a little run bus.

Re: THE ORIENT EXPRESS
there are several labs you can send sample to. one is something like oiltest.com. It will cost around 50 bucks or more, but the important thing is finding out what metals are in the oil - esp first after you purchase a bus, and hopefully they havent changed the oil just before that. well, at least thats what i look for.

That vinyl tile looks good in the kitchen. Feels good to have something look "finished" doesn't it? I have to agree with the others re: the couch - nice job!

Re: THE ORIENT EXPRESS
rv toilet doesn't use a gallon of water per flush.
plastic milk jug uses less of the environment to make than a toilet...

The only issue is that is was a front collision, so the main components of the engine can not be used, the side parts can. turbo, pipeing, pumps, bolts. It should save me a large amount of money in the long run.

Believe me: You do NOT -- repeat NOT-- want to use a Dodge pickup engine in your bus. Though the block is basically the same, the pickup version has a lot more horsepower, and a lot less torque. They are designed for very different GVWR ratings. The pickup version also has a whole bunch of electronics stuff that is expensive to fix, plus a bunch of smog stuff.
Your skoolie version 5.9-liter Cummins will go 300,000 to 500,000 miles with proper maintainance. it can be set up easily for between 175-225 horsepower.
