The USF SAE Skoolie

It is a team transport/tailgating/promotional rig for the University of South Florida Department of Mechnical Engineering Society of Automotive Engineers.

I figured its about time a started a thread on the bus so its easy to look up.

Here are the most recent pics from today, i spent 7 hours putting the vinyl on the windows, and got a good sunburn from doing so.

A few more vinyl sponsor logos and the outside will be done.

Check out the grill in the side storage compartment, im proud of that one.

We will have to comps on board networked together via wireless router.

Satellite tv and im working 5.1 surround.

The carpet with foam insulation underneath made a huge difference on sound coming from the engine.

Me and Tim putting the vinyl on. It is the see through type with the little holes in it. It doubles as window tinting as well. Good stuff makes the bus not look so much like a passenger bus anymore.

Me checking out our work

This time with the door closed

The interior lloking back. Room to seat 14 spaced the seats out an extra 8 inches for big boy leg room.

The kitchen made for cooking 3 meals for 15 people.

The rear resting/ conference area/ telemetry control center. Has a compter monitor mounted in the bathroom wall.

A view towards the front the PVC pipe it a curtain hanger to isolate the rest of the bus from the driver from distraction and the passengers from noise.

You are looking down at the copilots seat he has access to the navigation comp. Pilot and copilot are isolated from the rest of the bus. The small tv on the right is for rear view cameras.

The rear of the bus the black vinyl truned out pretty good.

ill take some more detail interior shots when i get som etim later this week,
the window vinyl we got from company called Kinetic Animation in sarasota FL. I beleive it cost roughly $18-$19 a square foot. You can do the math. Thats the beauty of being a nonprofit organization. Sponsorships.

i'm preparing to repaint my skoolie.....again.

I have been considering spraying a layer of clearcoat on top of the new paint, but it'll be a learning process. I've never attempted to work with any sort of clear coat before.

any tips?

Took it on its first trip from Tampa, FL to Rochester, NY. We averaged 8 mpg with a best of 9.5 and a worst of 7.5 We pulled an 8k lb trailer with no problems, had some problems with the electrical systems. here is a pic.

The president of SAE took a tour of the bus and a ton of pictures. He said we had the 2nd most elaborate rig in history of SAE competitions. Kettering universtiy had a full tractor trailer rig donated to them and i'd have to say that beats us out.

We got back from the Formula SAE race, in Detroit, on Monday. We did 95th out of 130, which is respectable for a 1st year team. We cruised 60mph and the temp hovered between 180-190. We were pulling about 8K lbs. Weight wise i didnt ever feel that i needed to use the electric trailer brakes. But it is a dog on the steep slopes. We are gonna turn up the fuel on it to get a bit more power.

We just bought 2 Carrier V 15000 BTU A/C's yesterday. We got a company to donate the cash to buy em at wholesale price. They are a must now that it is summer and a steady 94 degrees and 80% humidity. Ive got one mounted and am running the wiring as i write.
We leave for Green Valley, Arizona on SUnday to race at the Catepillar Proving Grounds for Mini Baja West. A/C in AZ is a must. We should have full load of 15 people and full trailer so we are gonna get the rig weighed.

I didnt get around to making the air dam yet, i think it is gonna be a summer project.

Ill get somebody to take some pics today of the interior.

Oh also i added 2 bunks in the back that fold up to the ceilling. I saw that somebody else did it on here ill post some pics fo that two.

We got 2 15k Btu Carrier Air V's. and they do the job. The only thing is our 5500W genrator struggles to run both a/c at the same time.

Arizona was nice when we left florida it was 93 degrees and 85% humidity. when we got to AZ it was 94 and 12% humidity.

our car didnt do so well we took a big hit early on it the race with a 40mph tumble, which led to other problems later in the day.

We blew out 2 trialer tires from picking up nails on the way back, only way we knew were people signaling us, the bus never felt a change.

we also got the whole rig weighed.
trailer: ~6500 lbs
rear axle: ~19000 lbs
front axle: ~6500 lbs
total just under 31000 lbs
total trip mileage was 4400 miles
best fuel econ: 10.78 mpg
worst: 6.47 mpg
Avg: 8.3 mpg
top sped flat level ground no wind with trailer: 66 mph
w/o trailer :73 mph

It was held at Catepillar's Tinaja Hills Proving grounds, theyve got some serious equipment out there.

Havent posted here in a while but thought I would up date everyone on the USF SAE Skoolie. In May we spent another 26 days living out of the bus traveling 12000 miles. From Tampa Florida, to Portland OR via Las Vegas. From there we came back east to Detroit MI, and from there up to Elkhorn WI. Everytime we travel, sitting in the bus for days, we come it with new ideas and ways to better do thinngs in the skoolie. So as of now I've got most of the wall out and am going through and repair some stuff while installing some things better. When traveling with 8 people in a skoolie the biggest problems you have are storage and cooking capabilities. So those are getting up and capactity greatly. Also to finally resolve our power issues I am going to install a 10KW diesel generator.

I will post some pictures soon, but I should have it done with a new roof deck before our 1st football game on Sept. 2nd.

It can be seen at http://www.usfracing.com

How did you guys place? I was participating in a first time mini baja team this year until the school let us down. It would have been fun to show up with our redneck engineered car. We defied typical mini baja logic and designs. What I'd really like is for them to lift the engine rule. I know it's all to keep things fair, but I bet our megasquirted turbocharged nitromethane briggs would have done just fine.
