Yeah, please put those rub rails in an envelope. I'll reimburse you the 44 cents.

"Not building a watch" is something I say here also. I believe that phrase was coined by one Otis Gudenov. (Oh, t'is good enough.)

Carry on.

Re: Toyhauler/camper project:

[quote="ramairws601"]Planning to skin the entire bus to make it smooooooooth. 20 ga is what I plan to use, $33 for a 4x10 sheet. 6 sheets per side is what it will take. I got it laid out so most of the seams will fall within a window/door/fender well area and the seem down the middle I can hide behind a pinstripe! I do plan on butting the pieces together so if I dont weld then I will have a backing strip and 2 rows of rivets and that takes away from the smoothness!
for todays progress.......
Chevy Silverado steering wheel from todays swap meet $6
Dash removal
rest of round corners in rear gone, gonna extend and square off the rear to the end of the floor
and wire wheeled the floor in prep for primer.

Looks like you might have the same rear end as my skoolie a gm t170
two speed judging by the shifter and we have the same steering wheel.

Uh...yes, those would come in very handy to fill the holes around my refridgerator access panel. I was going to fill them with urethane after I paint them, but actual inserts would be much more professional looking.

Re: Toyhauler/camper project:

had to take the taper piece down to do some trimming on it, got it back up the windshield and the wind was gusting 35+ so I left it there strapped. it is actually back up there now but it was too dark to take a pic.
smitty is this the one? heres a link to more pics of this bus, http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=298476 I have plans to do the same, stainless from the point my metal stops at now down the rest of the way, all hinged to provide access to storage, tanks, batteries, etc. will taper the bottom back up for clearance like this one as well. Like the stainless, also thought diamondplate aluminum would be cool but cost may be the deciding factor along with the pain of maintaining that diamondplates shine, Smooth stainless would be easier.

Re: Toyhauler/camper project:

also while crawling around I had found my LR axle seal leaking and it looks like one of the tires did some cracking on its way home, of course they are only 20 years old, guess that is expected huh?

WOW, that's a lot of sheet metal. I'll be eagerly checking the progress on this build, that's for sure. Nice job so far!

Damn, I have metal siding envy! Wish I had the talent to do that. The side in this last pic and the transition on the top looks totally perfect

Re: Toyhauler/camper project:

she is looking good!!! like the staggered roof setup!

you are not alone on the "not getting home first try" thing. I got my bus in Prince George, BC. I made it 3 blocks and the front right caliper seized up on me. Limped it to a KAL-Tire and got the front calipers and discs replaced and some fresh pads in them. Also put new drums and pads on to. Almost turned into a "1000 miles from home and not going anywhere fast" problem lol

Re: Toyhauler/camper project:

thanks for all your compliments on this. I went back and forth on wether to re-skin the whole side or not but by your responses I am feeling better about spending the extra time and money on it!
I have alot more spot welds to put in, probably another days worth of that before I can move onward. I have to weld in cross supports at the seams between the sheets of metal to stiffen it up some more and figure out where my windows will be and add some metal in those areas. then its on to the insulation/wood sheets for the floor and walls. I will be using this as a open design inside for awhile this summer with bare essentials to get us by till winter time when it gets too cold to ride anymore.

Re: Toyhauler/camper project:

been a busy week, I got my floor primed and bolt/nail holes sealed up. got the corner skins formed today and will be riveting them in this week sometime. also replaced the temporary floor panel with a permanent piece that is fully welded in. got my patch panels for the gas sender hole in the floor and the flasher covers done. oh and I cut off all the original skins lower supports.

Thanks Smitty,
It's Mountain Dew when I am working on the bus, does that count?
I am faced with a ATV ride and camping trip in 2 weeks, bus not ready, gonna be in a tent on the ground again this year.
2-3 hrs loading up, 1.5 hr drive (that I dont mind) unload, setup the tent (wind blowing no doubt) sped 2 nights and then do it all in reverse.
When the bus is ready I can just keep it loaded up and all I gotta do is drive the ATV's off when I get there.
Gotta get ready for the outing after that cause this first trip of the year will be a refresher course on why I am doing all this work!
