Re: Transmogrifie and Me

One gallon of bus kote will not be enough. I painted more than just the roof

everything white is bus kote, I bought 5 gal and only have about a gallon left. I did everything they recommended. Primer(two different kinds, because part was bare aluminum)two coats of bus kote, then clear coat. It made a HUGE difference in inside temp when sitting in the sun.

Dick, your bus looks great. It looks to be longer than mine. It is funny that we have the same paint scheme.

I certainly want to do the Buskote on my roof someday.

Looks like you did a lot of nice sheetwork on your top half. I wanted to keep as many windows as I can in mine, I know some are going to have to be covered. And I don't have any skills for actually taking windows out and sheet metaling them in. Who knows, maybe I'll get brave and try. There's a lot of good demo on that subject here. Your windows look nice.

Re: Transmogrifie and Me

Bus home where it's going to be for a few months. Good thing cuz I don't think I'll get it out of the mud for a few months. Geez.. I thought I lived in AZ.. this looks like OR. Only scraped one tree and caught a marker light (no comments) but when your front tire is turned hard and your still going forward, that was slimy mud.. left over from the freeze. We needed to get it moved before it rained more.

Got the heater running.. because the caulk wasn't drying. Took a dozen attempts before it actually lit, first time and all. And taping the windows/upper walls for painting floor and lower walls. Heater made the rain that came in with me vaporize and fog the windows.. now paint tape won't stick to anything. My 4 day window of no freezing didn't say it was going to include rain, 24 hours of soaking rain so far. Grrrrrrrrrr.

Need to level the bus up more but it's stuck here for now. At least it started. And funny to say it's starting to really feel like home, bare tin can that it is..

Once you get the interior dry then you need to think about insulation. You are rapidly approaching the point to where you have a short window of time between nice "spring" weather and freaking hot weather. You will want your roof white coated and thermal break/insulation on the side walls. Otherwise you will be working in a solar oven.

The thermal break/insulation is making a big difference in our bus even though we aren't finished.

Re: Transmogrifie and Me

Yep, I figure I'll need to get the roof coated around the end of March Yeah.

I get ahead of myself with my ideas and make myself step back and contemplate the next step. I didn't paint this weekend. It just didn't happen. Figure I need to get the insulation and flooring in before I move in so that gives me about a month yet.. time is flying.

Garage sale next weekend, maybe paint that afternoon, after. Supposed to warm up some.

The floor is painted. Not in the best of conditions but seems to have worked all right. Tomorrow wall insulation purchase to be done this weekend.

Re: Transmogrifie and Me

And the why of needing insulation... *lol* I live in AZ for heaven sakes.

And I have a serious question now....

out with the old, in with the new. Hard to get panels off but I figured it out eventually. First panel went in easy... 2nd panel not so good, have to redo and/or put some backing framework, thought the screws sticking out would suffice. Noted that I also need to recaulk and weatherstrip the windows.

But the question is... why am I taking out R-11 insulation and putting in r-3.5? (Just looked up 1" has an R-7-ish rating) Seems I'd be better off leaving the pink stuff, except for it's nasty. I didn't go any further because I need to know that I'm doing the right thing here.

All of these holes in the top of the paneling, under the window stripping, and not one was used ?? Someone used 'used' parts??

That is a very good question! I don't pretend to be an insulation expert, but taking off all those panels is a lot of work, and yes, why throw away existing insulation? I left mine alone, and added more insulation to the outside of the walls, and built a wood panel wall on top of that. But I like the wood panel look, and would not have wanted to have metal walls in my bus. Seems to me that since there is no rust inside the panels you removed, then I would leave well enough alone. Some people really hate that pink fuzzy insulation, but I don't see that yours has created any problems since 1979, and like you said, it is increasing your R-value. Yes the pink stuff is nasty, but who cares? It's hidden inside a wall.

Re: Transmogrifie and Me

Dan, I have to say that I think I concur. perhaps a layer of the white foam on the inside of this stuff and then wood. Having a hard time finding wood paneling though. And the stuff I found at Lowe's I like is composite wood for $33 a sheet. hm. Minimum order 5 sheets and I could order 5 sheets. And they would charge me $80 to deliver to my area. grrr.. (but for me to borrow a truck and pay gas to go there, 170 mile round trip?) small towns are good for some things, not for others.

Re: Transmogrifie and Me

Your R-11 fiberglass is for a 3 1/2" thickness which comes to about R-3.14 per inch. The foam panels are usually better insulators at up to r-5 per inch. One problem with insulating only the bays is the thermal bridging of the body ribs. The cold will come right through those ribs and cool down the inner steel skin unless you create a thermal break between the rib and the inner skin. How much time you want to spend on insulating will probably depend on where you'll be traveling and the time of year.

I got used paneling for free from freecycle, but I also bought some paneling at Home depot. The luan paneling is nice looking and cheap at like $25 per sheet (http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R ... RkxltlieW8). Seems like it was cheaper when I bought it, but I don't remember now...

The Luaun that I saw was rough and almost plastic like finish, it was strange. I'll have to look again. Like it didn't really have a grain to it, but not really like pressboard.
