I wanted to post this info here about our painting, since I posted it on a FB Skoolie group. I figured it would be good for anyone reading.
This paint is custom tinted Ace Rust Stop (the Blue). The white is Ace Rust Stop High Hiding White and Black is Ace Rust Stop Black Gloss. It's $30 per gallon at Ace Hardware. Oil-based enamel similar to rustoleum!
They gave us a discount ($27/gallon) because we bought so many gallons (7). We bought 2 gallons for the roof (used 1.5), 1 for all the black, and 4 for the blue. We definitely didn't need 4 for the blue. 3 would have done it and given us some extra.
It was sprayed on utilizing the buses air compressor that power the air brakes. We hooked an air fitting to the air tank, then a filter, and then a hose. The filter was $10 at harbor freight and was sprayed on with a $10 Harbor Freight HVLP spray gun (sidewalk sale) with a $6 dessicant dryer attached to dry the incoming air. It would work well with another compressor too, but this is all we had in the middle of the field where we sprayed it. We had to run the bus while spraying it (but ran off veggie oil). We even ran two hoses and two guns one day. We didn't have a regulator on the chain of air contraptions because it wouldn't work with the bus running and constantly creating more air in the tank. That means we were spraying way higher than the recommended pressure, but I adjusted the gun to spray a little slower.
We thinned the paint down with a bit of mineral spirits and sprayed on!
Last week we did all the prep work, which mainly consisted of degreasing with simple green, powerwashing, and scuffing/sanding all the paint with 220 grit sandpaper.
Lots of work, but it has turned out awesome!
