Very slow progress

Well, if Im lucky I get one day a weekend for a full day till sundown, which now is from 9am to 4pm. I have kids and a wife that is going to school so I need to juggle a lot of other stuff. I set my sights on one day and plan it the best I can to make the most of the day.

Next weekend is the T handles for the battery box if the weather holds out.

Once I get that done I can start on the interior framing, first is the kids bunk beds since I feel like it sets up the progress on the rest of the build, the master bed will build off of the bunk beds and on the other side the bathroom and kitchen will build off of the bunks as well.

My progress is also limited by my budget, I cant spare much cash so I scroung the best I can for deals or free raw materials.

For instance, around here there is a very popular classified web site that has free stuff or really cheap stuff, I go there first for the majority of my stuff, then if I cant find it there I go looking at my dads property of junk, then its off to the big box stores of fleebay.

It has become a labor of love for the whole family, were all look forward to traveling in Wilma, we have made plans for first, second, third, fourth trips in her.

My idea is that I can have her up and running by winter of 2019.

Slow and steady goes the build.

Its so cold outside,

Well boys and girls, it is snowy outside and as you may not knwo I am deathly allergic to snow and the cold. Being from the south west and currently living in snow country I dont do well with snow.

So progress on Wilma is slow going but I was able to do some work this weekend since it got up to 40 degrees F.

Got the on demand hot water heater installed int the place where the sink is going to be.

I found a killer deal on a 7.5 cu ft residential Avanti fridge, only pulls 95 watts.

I inherited a slide in camper and pulled the utility doors off of it and installed them on to Wilma to cover the generator access hole and the propane access hole.

On the engine front, perhaps I didnt say but I bought Wilma with a faulty cylinder liner and so on the disassembly I found that the turbo was also bad, demolished compressor wheel, and so I had to get a turbo as well. Side note, the turbo did not take out the cylinder, that was due to overheating.

So I made a super score and got a new turbo, saved me some serious cash.

My next project is framing the bunk beds which will locate the position of the master bed in the rear of the bus and the kitchen and bathroom in the center of the bus.

New Gears

I forgot to mention, I scored a new ring and pinion gear set for the differential. Wilma has a 4.44:1 ring and pinion ratio and I scored a 3.91:1 set, brand new for 175 shipped, should put me at 1700rpm at 70.74mph with my .75 5th gear and 41" tires which are 11r22.5 tires

In my local area we have a clasiffieds websight run by a local paper, KSL.com, great place to score stuff for the bus. Well tonight I scored 2 Toyota minivan seats that Im going to use for my co driver (Wife) and the baby in her baby car seat. The coolest part is they are super cheap and have the correct anchors for the child seat, LATCH system. Just need to anchor them down well. The co pilot seat will get a swivel so she can turn around and face forward while driving and face rear to use the table that will be between the two seats for meal time.

Wilma is coming together little by little but my wife can see the progress and she is getting excited.

Ive been playing with google maps and setting routes for future trips, cant wait.

Ill get pictures of the seats once I get them home tomorrow.

Front Seats

Scored these Toyota Minivan seats for the co pilot position and the babies car seat to anchor to. One even has a built in seat belt for the Mrs.

Little Update

Its been cold and unproductive. Just a little update

I got a used PacBrake exhaust brake for Wilma and started building one of the bunks.

Ive figured out that I will be mounting the two Toyota Sienna seats onto a pair of original bus seats, at least the bottom half. They will be installed into a properly engineered location so they should be strong.

After I install the 3.91 gear set, Ill have teh 4.44 set available to a good home, if some one wants them.

Some Pictures.

I may be interested in the 4.44 gears. I'm already geared real high and want bigger tires.
What model is your differential?

Rear End Type

Its got a Spicer/Dana N190 with 39 spline axles.

The part number for the gear set would be 1665361c91

This is an obsolete differential but was very common. Thei gear set fits N175, N190, N210, N340 and N400 rear diffs.

Let The framing begin

So Ive started framing the bunk beds for the kiddos which will be the starting location for all of the rest of the construction on either side of the bunks.

Ive got a 7 foot long section of counter as well, nothing too fancy just formica, got it cheap, brand new.

I got the urine diverter to make my composting toilet as well, and am continuing to buy stuff as I remember since its too cold to be working outside most weekends.

Slow and steady.

Big progress last weekend

Well the weather was a lot better, kind of windy but significantly warmer.

I got both bunks framed up and the master bed also mostly framed.

I also got the Co-pilot seat welded up and the seat mounted.

Next weekend I work on the bus I will be framing up the couch for the kids. This will be a slide out additional bed for guest willing to stay in the bus with us. And I will be building the other captain seat for the babies car seat, it wont rotate like moms but it will be recline able for later use.

I was also able to install some of the 1.5" thick insulation board into the ceiling. I will most likely use this board and will the gaps with spray foam, should use a lot less and still seal the bus up well, the insulation board is way cheap in my area as factory seconds.

Big progress in the last week

Hello Folks
made some good progress since my last update.
Got the couch/bed made, big win for me since I'm not a carpenter.
Started on the Fridge closet too
And I finished the second van seat for the baby.

This weekend I am finishing up the fridge closet and starting on framing the wet bath.

I am also going to finish the master bed and the underbelly of the bunk beds for the "In Bed" storage for the kids.

And More Progress

We got the bathroom framed and the fridge closet framed. I also got the water barrel mounts made up and fixed to the floor. Im using straps to hold them down but Im going to use some brackets to bolt them through the wood flooring and insulation and past the steel floor and use some big bolts and washers to make sure they dont move. They will get heavy at 500lbs each.

Next will be the overhead cabinets for the drivers side and over the drivers area.

New Update

So it has been a while but I've been working on Wilma more and more as the temps have been improving.

Got some overhead cabinets framed/hung, got the kitchen counter and cabinet framed, installed the sink and kind of got the stove installedish, still need to run the gas line to it.

Tore out the floor in the bathroom/shower in preparation for the shower pan, shower walls, insulation and some more framing. And get the shower mixing valve lined up for later pluming.

This weekend should be busy at the bus.

I also got the engine parts/ in frame kit, valve stem seals, and the one exhaust valve I need to replace.

I am impressed. You have made great progress working basically a day a week. You should be on the road by your winter 2019 easily if this progress keeps up.

The warmer weather brings more progress

Well since its been getting warmer ive been able to work on Wilma before work and the weekends have been so much nicer too. So here is an update.

I got the shower/bathroom framed up and the shower pan installed with the river rock mosaic laid just need to grout it this weekend.

I got the engine cover framed and covered with some speaker box carpet, I did include an access door to the access door for the engine to check the oil and stuff, but if I need to get in it isnt going to be light. I hoping it will keep the noise level down. I going to insulate the underside of the drivers floor and the steps to help additionally to keep the noise level down.

I also got the exterior shower mounted on the left side, just need to plumb it with all the rest of the plumbing.

Ill be installing the FRP wall panels this weekend and start on running all the PEX for the plumbing.
