I bought a bus!

Hey guys, my first post as a new 2009 IC 7 window bus owner!

Been wanting to do what many of you have done already and I finally pulled the trigger.

Question, how do I tell if my bus is a highway or mountain bus? It has the International DT 466 Maxxforce engine on it - but not sure that tells the story. How can I tell?

Thanks!

You should have come here and done your homework first. We would have advised against any bus newer than an 04 due to EPA regulations that are hard to diagnose and expensive to repair. The DT466 you have is a good motor, not as good as the 04 or earlier ones. The important factor on road or highway is the transmission. A 545 is normally not desired, but some say they are okay in a short bus. Any other trans would eb good on the highway, depending on rear gear.
Go to the UserCP and fill out your profile so we can better answer your questions.

Yeah... I knew about the EPA regulations but the bus seemed too good to pass up based on the condition and miles. It doesn’t require DEF but does have the DPF filter that I plan on having cleaned to avoid Regen.

I paid $3,200 for the bus. Do you guys think I should bail on it before I even get started for something prior to 2004??

You know why a 2009 bus sells for the same low price as a 1995 bus? The seller knew.

if that Maxxforce DT is in good running order and no check engine lights and no major fluid leaks then keep it..

you will probably drive it more like its desaigned and will have less issues with it than it may have had as a route bus..

the biggest issue with these was EGR failures.. or DPF getting plugged up due it never being warmed up properly.. most skoolie built busses are used on long trips where warmups arent an issue..

if the bus has issues now then id consider ditching it.. if it runs perfectly now then build away and learn about its possible caveats and watch for them and youll be fine...

Pkenty of box trucks built on the same chassis are out there with hundfreds of thousands of miles on them doing just fine because they get run hard enough they properly heat up and allows EGR and Regen to clear the DPFs properly

Thanks Chris, I appreciate the informative post and positive take. So far the engine seems really strong. Cranks right up and has good pep to it. I really like the size and the interior height as I’m 6’ there is plenty of space.

Thanks again for the reply.
