Having looked into doing an axle gear swap, doing the labor myself, will run me somewhere between $850 - 1000. This will basically get me a rebuilt "chunk" with new ring gear, pinion, pinion bearing and seal, and ... I forget what else. 1 year unlimited mileage warranty. The "chunk" is heavy, somewhere between 250-300 pounds; I'll see about buying/borrowing a transmission jack to remove & replace it when I'm ready. All that is required to remove it is (1) drop the driveshaft (should be 4 bolts), (2) pull the axle shafts (typically 8-10 bolts each), and remove the 10-12 bolts holding the chunk to the axle housing (recommend draining the oil first).
