5.9 Cummins governed out @65?

i got to drive my bus this weekend cause we finally got plates for it. 2 questions for any who dare answer:

1. i got the bus (it has yet to be named) cruising down a hill and after chugging up the other side of the hill @ 35 i wanted to get some momentum to get up the next one. when i hit 65 going down hill it seemed to govern out. the RPM's just went to idle with the accelerator pedal pushed down. what gives? can i adjust this to say 80mph? i assume its because its a school bus... its not like i was red lining it...maybe 2600RPM's?

2. the bus's title says "bus" as vehicle type. therefore the registration (in Pa) says vehicle type "bus" and "seats: 17" we took out seats and we have 4 school bus seats in it with 2 seatbelts each and a drivers seat thats 9 seatbelts. we also have a couch in there thats 3 seats. so depending on how you look at it its either 9 or 12 seats. i know you need a CDL to drive a vehicle designed to haul 16 or more passengers in pa. my goal is to get it titled as an RV to avoid all the questions and i know what to do to get there, but we already have a few hundred bucks into tags and state regulated B.S so im tempted to just run the bus tags for a year and get my money out of them then do the title change... what should i do? do buses have special inspection requirements?(we have one seat turned backwards)

advice please?
THANKS!!!

5.9 Cummings is only designed for 2500 rpm. if you want more speed change Diff ratio. remember changing ratio affects Power and torque

I hate not being able to go 80 You might ask the motor vehicle dept if they would refund some of your fees as the bus will be used as motor home or whatever. This would work here in Ca where I learned that if you junk your vehicle and the fees are current you can apply for a refund of the unused portion of the fees. I had the opportunity to do this several times when the folks who rented cars from me smashed them beyond repair.

If Pa will do this like Ca you would save money on the plates to say nothing of the savings on insurance. As always when dealing with the government know what you want going in and take as much documentation along as you can. Good luck!

If it is an '89 to '93 cummins (with Bosch VE rotary IP) there is a governer spring you can replace to raise the RPM's just did mine but haven't drivin it yet. Its called the 3200 spring for the cummins, look it up plenty of stuff out there on it.

Re: 5.9 Cummins governed out @65?

you need to change the rear axle ratio to go faster.
There are things you can do to the injector pump for more power, but you do not want to increase your rpms. The diesel engine forums have many posts about power increases. Increasing the rpm's like 1000 will not make the engine very happy...

Re: 5.9 Cummins governed out @65?

without a tach, it is dangerous to turn the govenor up, but depending on year you can turn up the rpm's and the hp for free by just turning some screws.

You can get 5-10 mph more out of it.

You're best bet would be to change out the rear end gears. A lock up torque converter and 4.10 rear end gears you can do 75 mph and get 6-8 mpg.

or you can drive 60 mph with the same setup and get 12 mpg!
