55 gal barrel storage tanks

Hello all I have been thinking about stepping into the plumbing phase of my build and would like to hear if anyone has used 55 Gal plastic drums for their waste tanks. Black and gray water. And what advice and wisdom there is to be shared on the topic as well as an invitation for innovative cheap idea's for tanks.

That's a great idea I see those for free on CL all the time. Tell me how did you mount them? Bands and a bracket?

So you use the complete water heater as it comes... Smart I would not have thought to leave it together but your right it's insulated and already has the hose connections and a semi large output where the element goes in. Spiffy, I like it.

Re: 55 gal barrel storage tanks

I used six 50-gallon barrels as water tanks (3 fresh, 2 gray, one black)...no complaints except they can make placement a challenge due to the shape.

Nice any advise on making the brackets to hold the beast's to the frame or chassis? Pictures help, visual learner.

I remember someone posting a link to a guy who used one, but I am not sure where the link is.

*edit* Ok, found the link.

Re: 55 gal barrel storage tanks

I'll be buying a conventional, not a flat nose, so I doubt mine comes with storage bays. Anyone have an idea what dimensions would fit under ther if strapped on?

The barrels I am looking at getting are 30gln 27"hx20"w (girth 62) and maybe the 40gln at 37"x20" (girth 71).

Would these fit up under a conventional?

I can fit 55 gal drums no sweat under my skoolie, I'm not sure if your bus has compartments or not you just need to crawl under and take a tape measure I would guess. But Cloud 9 is a old tilt nose style without bins so I got room to spare...

I had not thought about the mounting of them upright I like that! It could help consolidate some space and leaves other options open for me. I am considering insetting bunks into the floor. The more space I would have the better for the addition of single sleeping pods for the kids.
