60's Magic Chef RV Stove Question..

I was given this old LP stove from a friend..

And I cant figure out why theres 2 different sized copper lines running out of the back of the stove to the propane tank (which were cut off at some point)

Perhaps the small line actually went to the pilot in the oven? Thats where a similar line goes on my Magic Chef.

not sure why there are 2 lines, but thats a nice looking stove though

Does anyone know if its possible to buy flared copper tubing, or would I have to flare it myself?


Or is there another type of heat resistant tubing I could use to replace the one in this stove?

Since that is a single flair and not a double like used on brake lines, the chepo flairing tool available at Harbor Freight or the like will do just fine. Take a couple of practice runs on scrap copper tuning to get the "feel" before you flair the actual line.

i had to flare mine myself. you can buy some short lengths of rubber tube that already have fittings on them. I also went to an RV place that would cut and flare copper to length for a fee. i bought my flare tool at lowes

Wouldn't the rubber melt that close to the burner?

I have some hose that looks something like this, but I thought it would be a bad idea to have it a few inches away from the burner.

I'd advise staying with copper until you are well away from the heat of the burners or oven. Even in homes that have plastic gas lines in the walls, the last few feet are always metal of some sort. Copper is plenty easy to work with and we know it works.

I hate to tell you guys, But copper is NOT supposed to be connected to the appliance. Nor is that rubber hose that got posted. The rubber is a flex line to connect the propane bottle. Gas and propane appliances are supposed to be connected using a stainless gas flex line. This prevents the flared copper connections from fatiguing and failing.

We use propane here on the farm in 4 buildings. Every year someone, or something bumps a copper line and causes a leak. It's always the flared fitting that fails. Do what ever you can to make sure there is no sideways stress, or movement on the flared fitting.

Nate- seems you are mixing RIVA and household applications. While it is OK to use stainless you will find copper direct connect on brand new RVs. Just saying

And here I thought all those nasty RV fires were caused by the refrigerators . . .

Actually, most of those fires are caused by the friction of the payment coupon book rubbing against the insurance policy somewhere in the glove box
