8.3 oil pressure
when i start my motor the oil pressure is 70 80. after it gets hot it drops to 20. on high idle it goes up over 50. is this normal? is this one of the reasons to use high idle? im droping the pan soon to do a gasket change on the motor, should i put a new oil pump in it anyway? thanks

Inspect it for wear and any other abnormalities. A service manual should describe clearances and inspection for you. But what you have sounds fine to me.

How many hours on engine, what type oil are you using? Sounds more like normal wear than anything. Maybe send off an oil sample, to be sure nothings going on.
Pretty much oil pressure is oil pressure. Either you have it or you dont. Lots of variables.
Oil pump is on the front of the engine.

That's not many hours at all.
You shouldn't need any special tools.
I'm thinking that when it's all said and done, you'll have the same oil pressure as you have now.
Does the back oil gauge have the same readings?

more often than not lower oil pressure is caused by looser clearances on bearings and parts in an engine than it is the oil pump..
engines age, things get loose... 20 PSI at idle on a Hot engine doesnt sound bad to me esp if the idle is at 600-700 RPM or lower..
you CAN put a higher VOLUME oil pump in if you think you are not running enough oil through your engine..
80 doesnt sound bad if you are running it up to 2500 RPM or so when its cold
there is a pressure regulator but thats rarely the issue.. though something to look at..
the main thing is to get the leak fixed and then not to run low pressure when you are into the throttle hard as thats when the turbo needs the most oil.. you definitely dont want to oil-starve the turbo!

10psi per 500 rpm diesel rule of thumb. have you tried a thicker oil like a 20\50 diesel certified? straight 40 wt for detroits. did you get a cheap Charley oil filter or a quality luberfiner napa etc.? everything means something.
