Alternator missing?

i have a 87 chevy c60 with a 454. i only have one alternator, is this right? I have two more grooves for belts on my crank pulley and an empty bracket for something. anyone know?

i have power steering, alt., and waterpump ran by a single belt each.

edit: the waterpump/powersteering are on one belt

My alternator pulley has two belts, also. One is broken right now, but I have two new ones in the Jeep, if I ever get around to putting them on. A mechanic on the School Bus Fleet forum said that he often had a hard time keeping alternator belts on the IH 9.0 Liter engine, which is what I have. He recommended having spares on hand, and said to put them on TIGHTLY! I think the front alternator bearing may be worn, and that might be part of the reason the belt came off, but I'm not sure. I just haven't had the time (or the guts) to start taking stuff apart under the hood.

just a guess, but one of the empty slots might have been for an air compressor. That bus prob had the option when it was being built to either have hydraulic or air depending on what was ordered.

Paired fan belts

Thought I'd give you all a heads up on V-belts, and multiple v-belts:

Just because v-beltspurchased together are purchased new, DOESN'T mean they are the same size! Manufacturing being what it is, tolerances are pretty good, but not perfect.

When I worked in a printing plant and we used gigondo motors to run compressors/chillers, we used SETS of belts. These are purchased SPECIFICALLY as sets, to ensure they all pull part of the load. Sets come in two, three, four, five, etc. belts.

Most belts are close in size, but unless they are EXACTLY the same size, when you put two on your twin-pulley setup, one will be looser, leaving the other to do most of the work...and that leads to early failure.

Better to get a matched set, they'll last longer and be MUCH less likely to leave you stranded somewhere.
