Angled shelves?

howdy.....

something i have been considering and haven't seen done yet. so, has anyone built their shelves, dresser, nightstands, angled towards the bus walls?

i've driven lots of delivery trucks and hitting railroad track crossings seem to launch everything on to the floor. the bookmobile came with shelves angled to the walls, has anyone built their bus like that so the alarm clock doesn't end up on the floor every trip? just asking

also, any clues on TV's? i heard here that many TVs will down convert to a 12 volt, but i haven't seen one yet. I've looked but not to hard...... just hoping someone will tell me which ones

Re: Angled shelves?

I'm only starting to build cabinets, but the one set I built so far has angled shelves. Only about a 5° slope towards the wall. I don't have cabinet doors done yet, but driving around with the shelves full hasn't resulted in anything falling on the floor yet, unlike the level counter which tossed things all over. I'd say it's a good way to go for the most part. I won't be doing it for the upper cabinets just because it'll look strange and out of square from below (I think. I'll have to play around with it a bit and see what I can get away with).

Re: Angled shelves?

I like to use a small lip at the front of the shelf. It does a good job of keeping things on the shelf under normal circumstances and everything doesn't end up back by the wall.

Re: Angled shelves?

And about TVs:
I've been curious about the same. Probably won't worry about a TV since I use my laptop for most viewing, but I've seen some possible candidates all over. Mostly smaller TVs.
What I've been doing is going to the wall-o'-TVs at almost any big box store and looking at the power cords running to the back of them. If the power cord has an adapter that is rated for 12vdc out you should be able to snip the power cord up and connect it directly to the 12vdc source. Might need to put some sort of voltage stabilizer to keep the voltage consistently around 12v. I bet the TVs can handle the 14.6v seen while charging, but it's a risk.

Re: Angled shelves?

I would have thought that it is best to employ the same rules as you would on boats.

Sunscreen is your friend, wear shoes and sunglasses on deck, and if you dump me into the lake I'm watering down your beer when you aren't looking.

If it can break put it is a cupboard, if not, a shelf with a rail.

Re: Angled shelves?

In this photo you will see that I have secured the studio speakers with screw hooks. The little stereo in the upper cabinet has been siliconed to the cabinet shelf. The computers are held in place by screws around the perimeter as well as L-brackets. The lamp shade bases have screws holding them to the desktop. The external hard drive and disc writer are siliconed to the desktop.

Most of my upper cabinets have doors that have locking mechanisms.
