Anyone regret removing original AC unit?

We now have our 1999 Freightliner29' bus on our driveway. The large a.c. unit in the rear works great! The bed will be going underneath it so it's not in the way. My original plan was to remove it but I need to learn about the whole system first before I start chopping, cutting, unbolting and the likes. But after running it yesterday, it gets very cold very fast! So I was wondering if anyone ripped theirs our and regetted it?

Very few of the older buses have A/C.

I wish mine had a factory AC. I hear they are expensive to work on, but I personally would run it till it quit working. I have 2 roof airs just to keep it cool going down the road in the middle of summer. Then I have to deal with generators running while traveling and filling them up with gas too.

Hi, thanks for the reply. It looks like the one in our bus was serviced recently. It has some new hoses and a new compressor. Works really well but like you say! Run it till it quits and it's not really in the way so not in a hurry to remove it. I don't know a lot about a.c. being from England, It's always bloody cold and damp over there.

It drops the interior temperature down to ambient right quick, but no matter how low I set the thermostat it never gets any cooler than the outdoors!

Sometimes I wish mine had a factory A/C. It was one of the things I thought I "needed" on my shopping list. But the reality is, by the time I'm done with insulation a "right-sized" factory A/C would be way overkill because the heat load will be so much smaller. I also never figured out a good clean way to hack in an electric compressor, or a dual clutch and an electric motor, so that the A/C could be run while the engine is stopped.

I think the main reason I want to keep it is it looks like a lot of work to remove it safely, especially when my knowledge of a.c. is very limited. Plus it works really well! For now! I have plenty of other projects to keep me busy without worrying about a.c.. Thanks for the replies.

Assuming one got a bus with A/C units in, and we planned on removing the interior and r-insulating and doing walls and ceiling... How would one avoid screwing up the A/C in that process? Take it down careful and put it back when done? Or leave it and work around?
