Basement Doors as Tables

I've been looking at the doors of my storage compartments. I have two doors on each side on a basement about 10' in length.

So I was thinking that those doors would make excellent tables when parked. We could set a grill on them, prepare food, do whatever.

It turns out that the top hinges are 38" above the ground. A little higher than the average table, but not so high that it makes a difference.

So my plan would be to attach wooden laths to the doors once they are painted, and add chains to keep them level when open.

Anyone see an issue with this?

I think that's a great idea. And eliminates having to carry a folding table for dining in the great outdoors.

Do the hinges run the full length of the doors? If not, may want to add some more to help with the added weight of food, drinks, weight-laden elbows, small children or pets, etc.

And might be better to add swing-down legs attached to backside of doors vs holding up with chains....take more weight off the hinges.

Good points.

The hinges run the full length of the doors. The way levers work, there would be little stress on them even with fully loaded tables.

Mine is 29 inches. But you could mount it at a 45deg. angle and extend the leg length. This is out a mid 70s winni. And all junkyards have a few of them.

Just modify the cables holding it open, put one on each end.

You could make tip-out legs on a multi swivel hinge, that can either slant back to the door latch mech, and/or the edge corners of the basement. This way it would "always" be level in relation to the bus itself. They would fold flat to the inside of the door and be held with a clip. you could fab them out of small alum square tube

think hood prop rod arm, or cowling door arm. the ones on the KC135 are even extendable.
