Well that makes sense to me. If that's the case, then all you should need to do theoretically is have a field wire from each battery bank and a switch such that you can start the bus with the charged battery's field voltage. Once you were underway and you were sure the house battery was charged perhaps you could then just switch to the discharged battery's voltage to provide the field current to the alternator. I guess I'm only used to working with 10SI and 12SI 3 wire GM alternators. I know it would work with those...not so sure on other externally regulated alternators. I also don't know if this would cook the charged battery. I don't think it would hurt anything since the extra current would be going to the discharge battery, but electricity is misterious
