Question for y'all, We are building bunk beds for the kids, but don't have the room for a regular twin mattress. We have to do a 2ft6inch x 6ft size.

We thought about just using 5in thick foam ($20/yrd at JoAnn's fabric store),

An air mattress is also a possibility, but twin size is 6 inches to wide, and 3 inches to long. Do you think it will pressure fit tight once blown up?

So what would you suggest? What are y'all doing for beds?

I would go with the foam. That is what I am putting on my couches in the bus. Air mattresses are great, until they aren't. Especially with kids

Michigan Discount Mattress has all sorts of odd sized mattresses for RVs Boats and other things. It is where I will be getting my mattress. I was able to choose a size, thickness and material based on the space I have available for it. Maybe they will have something that would work for you.

I've been thinking about buying a queen size memory foam mattress topper at Costco and cutting it in half. They're 60x80 inches, so half would make a 30x80.

Of course I haven't actually laid on one of those toppers, either on a bed or just flat on a hard floor (or bunk board). But the cost (US$50 for each half of a queen) is only a little more than the 3 or 4 inch open foam camp mattresses I see for $20, and surely it'd have to be better than those..?

We had custom sized twin mattresses made. They are the same length as a twin but only 32" wide. (A twin is 34" wide). This worked well for our bunk room. And twin sheets still fit. This size also just fit with the beds folding up against the walls, one above the other, to allow the back of the bus to be a toy hauler when necessary.
