beds in bays

Has anyone used storage bays for "basement beds"? We're just exploring ideas and options for our floorpan so any input would be helpful, thanks!

They are only 18" tall, 4" of bedding leaves you 14". I don't think coffins are that tight. Hope the user is not claustrophobic.
I have slept in the trunk of a 66 Chenille. That was a fun night of the start of an epic weekend.

I just bought an older Prevost. This is not a school bus per se but rather, it is a charter bus type of vehicle that has HUGE bays. I've already decided to fabricate screen doors for the forward bay just to make it "liveable."

So I think the idea is GREAT! We just need to make it comfy and practical.

I saw a motorcoach conversion (maybe on this site, but not sure) where they had put 4 beds in the storage bays, and accessed them through the floor.....lift a 'flap'. step down onto the mattress, and start snoozing. The flaps (doors) were about 72" x 30", and when opened lay flat in the central aisle, so you could still walk through the bus while the beds were in use. And the flaps were strong enough to stand on when in the closed position, so they had plenty of open space in the daytime.

I *think* they had tabletops that mounted on the walls above the beds and swung down for use, but not positive on that.....it's been a while.

Google "Shachagra". He made 3 sleeping berths for his three kids in the lower part of his hand built motorhome. Lots of articles out there about it.

By using some cabinet space, the berths have an area you can stand up in.

Maybe spring and summer time you could make slide out bunks and use a cot type mosquito netting and still use the floor space inside.
Guess that would depend on your actuall time of use? But they do make sleeping bags and insulated tarps that could cover the netting poles.
