Why do you think there is rust in the tank? Just take extra fuel filters and tools with you. I wouldn't go through
the trouble of changing the tank unless I had to.

If the tank was sitting with water in then there may be rust in it. If not then I would not worry about it (unless you can see inside and see rust flaking off). There are many vehicles that sit for years before someone brings them back into service and don't have problems with rusty fuel tanks (like my '73 IH Scout II). Bus fuel tanks are not easy to remove & install (been there, done that). Big, heavy and lots of steel around them for crash protection.

I would consider adding a second fuel filter is a easy to get to place after the tank and before the rest of the system..that way the filters easy to swap if you have to...and sounds easier than a tank swap far from home.

Yes, I agree. Dont change out the tank. I believe it will be ok. it apparently hasnt sat around all that long, and I have personally started stuff that has sat around for 15 years (what a treat) and i simply added a clear plastic inline gas filter to it, and even though you may change it out occasionally, it is way cheaper and less aggaravating than dropping that tank. The bus is a 86, so you should be fine. And like Demonknight said, mount it where you can get at it easy in case you need to change it roadside.
