Bus rack

Hello, I am designing a rack to fit on top of my 85 Bluebird. Mostly to haul our stuff, but sometimes to climb up and sit on. My question is this. How tall can I make this thing to guarantee no problems with bridges or overpasses. Thank you.

Re: Bus rack

There are some roads you just can't take a bus on, period. You should also try to avoid most parking garages and drive-thrus.

Most trucks are under 13'6". I believe clearances have to be posted for anything under 14', but I'm not positive.

Maximum height is 14 feet in most states, but some may still be at 13' 6". Be safe and keep it under 13-6.

But you are ALWAYS responsible for not hitting anything. So start paying attention to all signs.

Re: Bus rack

I am building a 35ft rack with stairs on my bus. the deck itself is right at ten feet. It will have fold up railings that are approx. 42 inches.

If your rack is just for you and maybe a significant other and you plan on using it for carrying stuff around MOST of the time you will be 10 ft at the crown and figure another six inch tall railing for tie down. If all your gonna do is climb up there and sit and not do a bunch of walking about you dont need a safety like railing. Or build a folding railing...

Re: Bus rack

Truck driver gets his truck stuck under an overpass, with Engvall watching as the cop arrived...

Cop: "You get your truck stuck?"
Engvall: God bless that trucker, without missing a beat, he goes: "Nope, I was deliverin' that overpass and ran outta gas."

had to post it...
