Re: Clearance lighting

They're required by federal law, FMVSS 108.

Basically, you should put the lights back where they were. 3 in the center of the roof cap front and rear (6-12" spacing), one at each top corner, and one halfway down the length of the bus on each side (line up with the reflector at the bottom). Front and middle should be amber, rear should be red.

Re: Clearance lighting

check with the stste police on the 3 center id lights, since you're noncommercial rv,they might not be necessary. If you don't have to have them I wouldn.t put them on, reason being if you have them they have to work, if they arent there it's one less thing that you can be stopped for.

Re: Clearance lighting

The state police might not know, it's a federal requirement. Then again, state police don't always know state laws either.

That link I posted says the center ID lights are required for all vehicles over 80" wide. It doesn't say anything about commercial or non-commercial. Dually pickups have ID lights, even if they're registered with passenger plates. Basically, the lights warn other drivers at night that you're big.

And Smitty, your bus had the lights, the ID lights are the 3 on the top edge of the roof cap, over the "SCHOOL BUS" sign.
