Covering up roof emergency hatch
Anyone have any experience covering the roof emergency exits up? I was thinking of just riveting/siliconing a piece of sheet metal, any reason this wouldn't work?

Don't see why it wouldn't, give at least an inch of overlap, and paint liberally with an elastomeric paint.
Should be water tight.
I have seen it in a few other threads on here. Sometimes to close it up permanently, sometimes to.ahrink the hole to fit a fan.

I used a piece of fiberglass that I removed from the inside of the bus to cover mine. Used butyl tape under the fiberglass sheet and some Henry 212 clear sealant over the screws and edges.
Someone here on Skoolie put a skylight over his.

Just get some steel and some body panel seam sealer. Rivet it down, and you're good.

used some aluminum sheet, just a bit larger than the old hatch frame.
Clean off the old butyl tape gasketing, smack down the old screw holes with ball peen hammer, wipe surface off with starting fluid.
Put down new butyl tape and screw it down with Tek screws (with sealing rubber and washer combo).
You want to follow the line of fasteners that held the hatch in as they are or should be going into the internal ribs and some other channels pieces.
Do not try to hit the old screw holes with the new ones.

I did not measure it, but its from the celling panels which seemed pretty thick, at least as thick as the roof itself.

Aluminum will work, but steel is cheaper, easier to work with, and won't cause any galvanic corrosion.

Thanks for the input gentlemen, I put the order in at the metal shop this afternoon. Should have my window inserts and hatch covers ready to install this weekend.

Are you going to skin the windows or build "blanks" and put them in the window frames?

I removed the hatches and covered the holes with plexiglass. We now have two skylights. They're wonderful when camping in mild climates, but have to cover them from the inside when it's cold so we can retain heat.
