Daytime running headlights

I have a 1987 Thomas SaftLiner, and would like to replace the DRL with regular headlight switching. My headlights come on as soon as I turn on the igniton switch.
Anyone have any input on this?

Yes, leave them the way they are.

DRL should be on every new vehicle sold.

A patriotic post if I ever read one! You guys up North have a few good ideas from time to time.

What kind of input are you looking for? It would be easy to add a switch in the middle of the circuit. I would probably do it just to have the ability to keep the bus running should the alternator die, the headlights would drain the battery in no time.

Re: Daytime running headlights

This is interesting. In Minnesota buses are required to have their headlights on if there are children on board, but I guess I don't know about if they don't. I do know the use of the strobe is limited only to when kids are on. I see no REAL harm in still having the DRL circuit, but like Steve said...a toggle switch going to the headlight relay trigger is all you would need. Are you sure there isn't a way to turn them off as it is? I'm pretty sure you can do so with the newer Chevy trucks, but don't ask me how. I just remember it being a topic of discussion once somewhere along the way somewhere along the way.

Re: Daytime running headlights

I certainly want to be able to idle my bus without the headlights being lit. I will install a lighted toggle switch if need be. Lights “on” toggle switch lit-up.

Re: Daytime running headlights

My DRL shut off when my park brake is set, that should be the trick for never having to worry about them draining the battery.

and yes, I am patriotic

Re: Daytime running headlights

Thanks for all your input. I guess a single switch inline of the headlight relay may have to do. I was hoping someone knew that it is a particular type of headlight switch being used, or perhaps an extra connection to the existing switch.

Thanks!

Re: Daytime running headlights

i think daytime running lights put motorcycles at a disadvantage. 10 or 15 years ago bikes were about the only vehicles that came from the factory with headlights that were on all the time. It really helped to set them apart, now they blend in.
