flea bay tankless water heaters.

when I was flea bay last i was looking at rv water heaters. I saw this tankeless water heater that runs off of propane and ac also. But here is the oddity its made to mount just behind a shower head and has two heat settings. about $40.00 bucks. the expensive one are about $80.00
but they have a cover and include the shower head as well.

Has anybody ever used one of these good bad ugly. What is your opinions?
Also had the idea putting the cheap unit on the sink too. Since it only runs when its used wondered if they would be more economical.

Re: flea bay tankless water heaters.

I looked at those back when I was still thinking about having a shower inside the bus. I figured they have about a 40 degree rise in temp at full tilt boogie. Obviously you get warmer if you slow the flow down. If my water was in my tank at say 50 degrees that would make for a 90 degree shower which is perfectly acceptable. I think they would REALLY do well as a supplement to a solar batch water heater. Alas...24 amps was more power than I could muster and my shower plans have changed. If someone purchases one I'd sure like to hear how they work.

Re: flea bay tankless water heaters.

andrew I think I should get one of the big units and just do the whole bus instead of just a shower head they are about 200.oo or less
there are a ton of brands on the market I have found, the one I am really thinking about is a lp version that way I should always have hot water even if I don't have electricity (ac) that is.

Re: flea bay tankless water heaters.

I like propane anyway. It has better recovery times and is far more efficient. One of these days I'll get around to doing my solar batch heater.

Re: flea bay tankless water heaters.

The batch heaters are stupidly simple. They aren't real reliable since the depend on the weather, but for me it works.

The long and the short of it is that it's just like leaving a garden hose out in the sun all day. You know that nasty rubber tasting blast of 120 degree water you get when you go to get a drink because you're parched? The batch heater I want to use will be the same idea.

Basically I'm just going to build an insulated box about 8 inches tall. The bottom of it will be lined with a thick steel plate as a h*ector on the cover so I can use it to focus some more light on the box.

So...supply line runs up from the bus into a check valve and then the box. It will sit in there until I open the hot water tap at which point it will drain some nice hot water (hopefully) for me while refilling the coil from the supply line. It isn't going to work well on cold days and by 4:00 am it might be a bit cold to take a shower, but the building supplies for the operation are cheap (aside from copper) and it should suit my needs fairly well.

My quick and dirty calculations lead me to believe that 100 feet of 1 inch i.d. tube should get me just over 4 gallons of hot water at any given time. That's comparable to most RV water heaters though the recovery time will of course be less. On the otherhand, it is cheaper by a long shot and can supplement any later heating system I use.

Re: flea bay tankless water heaters.

Well, it could be a supplement which would REALLY cut down on energy usage, but I'm fully convinced that during the summer months it would provide enough heat on its own. On a hot day your car can get to 150 degrees. I think that a device that is DESIGNED to get hot in the sun could hit 150 degrees easily as well. Now assuming you used proper materials with low thermal coefficients it could heat water from say 60 degrees in the tank to 100 degrees at the tap relatively easily. You're not going to get hot, steamy showers, but you aren't going to be checking around for appendages that seem to have shrunken up and disappeared afterwards either.

Again...it's all just theory. That's the beauty of this busing hobby. You are free to do whatever you want whenever you want and you usually have an interested crowd following along. Fail or succeed, atleast I can count on the skoolie crowd being accepting and understanding.

I have one of those 115 Volt shower head heaters here -- still in the box. I'll report back once I get it working.

Re: flea bay tankless water heaters.

why not mount one of those on the roof of your bus?

Quote:
2 - 2'x20' pre-plumbed panels
Heats pools up to 24'
For pools 24' and over additional panels required
Increases your pool water temperature up to 10 degrees
Most efficient solar panel in the industry - producing over 80,000 BTUs a day
Compatible with your existing pool pump
10 year prorated warranty
Better than a gas heater - no gas line, no gas bills, no pollution
Made in the USA for quality you can count on
More Tubes per panel than other brands!
I'm sure they would provide you with plenty of warm water to take showers etc.
I was thinking if I could somehow mount this on the roof or have it stored in my storage boxes while driving and set it up when stationary. The water lines could be plumbed with quick connectors, only need a pump to get the water up and then its gravity fed.

with the water adding weight to the unit itself, how much weight would the roof need to carry
most importantly would it. am assuming that this is apretty big unit?

Price?
I've been thinking just a bunch of ABS pipe on the roof.

Re: flea bay tankless water heaters.

buy it now price on e-bay is $149, but there is many that are auctioned off and they go anywhere from $80 up or so.
One panel with water is around 45lbs. each kit includes 2 panels, could mount one on the left and one on the right. Defenetly not to heavy for a busroof.
