Ghost In The Brake Light Machine

The other night someone chased me down as I was walking my dog and said my brake lights were on.
I went back and sure enough, it was true. however, on the light diagram over the dash that indicates when and which lights are on, all was normal, i.e. no lights on. The bus was turned off and no key was in the ignition. I pumped the brake but the lights stayed on.
I was only able to get them to extinguish by turning the idiot switch that disconnects the battery but they turnd back on when I switched it back later, to see... I had an idea to start the engine and then the problem was solved. the lights went out.
Anyone have this kind of problem before?

check for a brake light switch at the brake pedal when you push the pedal it opens the switch and allows the lights to come on if the pedal does not go up far enough the lights will stay on i hope thats it timbuk
