Houston Area Skoolies - Renfest Gathering

Attention all Houston area skoolies, wannabes and hangers-on with a fun and historical bent!

The Texas Renaissance Festival is near, and the new "quiet family camping area" is looking quite ideal for a bus gathering.

I would like to propose the weekend of Halloween for a mini skoolie gathering at Renfest. (Maybe we can pretend its a precompression event for Skooliepalooza in Quartzite during January?). We can camp in the grasslands, away from the nighttime noise sources, visit the event during the day, and spend some time getting to know each other.

This would be a very family-friendly event, loosely organized, with a "come-and-sit-a-spell-or-just-do-your-own-thing" flavor. If you are not into camping with a hoarde, simply stake-out a piece of turf a few dozen yards away and be a "satellite" camp. Tents, campers, domes, busses... However you roll, its all good with us. There is a huge amount of space and its never crowded in the grasslands.

More info about the event is here: https://texrenfest.com

Details:
There are public showers ( $8 ).
There are both "real" flush-type toilets and portos
There is on-site potable water (free) but no RV connections like in a park. Fill-up your tanks when you get there just before you get to the campsite
There is no electrical. Bring your own QUIET power.
There are dump facilities nearby, but not at the event.
Camping is $20 per vehicle, flat fee, regardless of head count
Tickets for the Renfest gate are sold separately.

If you are interested, post! Hope to see you there!

That sounds fun! I am certainly interested in doing that. I wish I had a finished Skoolie to bring, but can very easily settle for camping.

I don't think my bus will be campable for my family at that time but we can certainly come hang out for the day. We had originally planned on Barbarian weekend, but halloween works too.

We'll be ready next year for RenFest. This year is dedicated to getting HF move-in ready.

Good stuff all!

FWIW, my bus will likely be mostly disassembled in the passenger comparment and it will DEFINITELY not be a show piece. I'm really just using it as a pack mule for our stuff, so ANY bus that comes out for this event will be a Prom Queen by comparison (hehehe).

Tent campers (and anyone else): bringing food is pretty optional. One of our Johnsonites is a compulsive cook. There is no 12-step recovery program for this affliction. You're likely to be fed unless you are moving faster than she is (hard!). At Burningman she gifted 5,600 tamales (not a misprint) to the "playa chickens", then cooked for our entire camp: quail breast, steak, southern style pork chops, ettoufe, teriyaki salmon, tikka masala, and finished the event with a gumbo/jambala hybrid for 150 people. (The bus has 4 chest freezers in it to support her madness. If you wondered why I needed a bus, there is your answer.)

Been away doing Life Stuff. Apologies for not checking-in sooner.

Justin: great to hear you will make it! Looking forward to meeting you, as well as anyone else who comes. Looks like it'll be a fun gathering.

Funny bit: I was thinking about how I would try to explain how to find us at Renfest. Took me about 60 seconds before I realized "Um... Dum-Dum... Exactly how many Skoolies do you figure will be there? And how could anyone MISS us?" Duh. LOL. I tend to forget I'm a 40 foot rolling billboard that doesnt blend-in anywhere except at Burningman.

Okay... Checking in again.

Turns out the camping area opens THURSDAY afternoon the weekend of the 30th, so we plan on going up early. Will stay thru Sunday PM is the weather is good. Should be a fun time for all!

Again; if you want to tent-camp, and dont want to deal with hauling all your crap out there, we will feed you. Just give me a nose count so our compulsive cook will have an idea how much to bring.

See ya'll there!

If I'm not working I will come along and visit for the day from Lafayette. Seems like a good time to introduce the wife to skoolies in action!

Awesome. We will be there some time on Saturday and stay for the night. We are well versed in car camping so we will have our own dinner stuff. Look forward to meeting everyone!

Some bad news, we will not be making it out.

My first bus conversion injury has been an interesting one.
I noticed something in my eye the other day. Went to the doctor last night, and they said it was a piece of metal and tried digging it out with a needle, but it was too deep in my eyeball.
So I had to go in this morning to an optometrist and they had to drill into my cornea to get it out. The metal fragment had started to rust, so they dug around for a bit this morning trying to remove the all rust. Anesthesia helped numb the pain, but its hard to get over having to stare directly at a drill cutting into your eye.
I wear safety gear while I work and did not notice anything go into my eye, so I suppose the lesson is to check your eyeballs when your done for the day just in case.

I have been asked to stay close by this weekend in case of infection. I am bummed out because I was looking forward to this for awhile.

Man, I've seen that happen to a LOT of folks. Its a really common injury in steel fabrication.
I always double up and use glasses AND a full face shield when grinding or doing any heavy cutting.
Even with that, sometimes something gets into an eye now and then.

The worst is that the metal was in there for so long without me noticing it, and it begun to rust. some of the rust is pretty deep.

Fist time that happened to a co-worker and he told me the story of what they do to remove it I was HORRIFIED.
My deepest sympathies to you, that drill is brutal!
You'll be fine, though. At least you won't be losing the eye!

Yet another argument for doubling up on eye protection. I had to carve a chunk of steel out of my eye years ago with an Xacto knife, but it saved my vision. I now wear goggles under a face shield.

I know when I have to go in for my MRI's they always ask me if I work with metal, grinding, welding, etc.... They ask on paper & then the technician asks verbally as they go over my papers.

Can you imagine getting an MRI with a piece of metal in your freaking eyeball?!?!?

I once wore a soft neoprene compression knee brace to an MRI... Only to find out after my leg started burning intensely that there were braided wires supporting the sides of the brace, sewn into the fabric!
