Tango & I have a little different view on this one. While propane fridges do definitely have their down sides I think the leveling thing is WAY overstated and the fire danger is minimal.

I live full time with a propane fridge and have for a total of almost 10 years. I spend almost 7 years on the road and got to know a ton of other full timers. While I am sure that there must be some instances of fires caused by failing fridges I have never heard a firsthand or even second hand report.

I have run propane fridges while parked at an angle steep enough that I could not sleep in the bed comfortably. No problem.

That all said: When the propane/electric (2way) fridge in my other RV failed I replaced it with a home type electric. I removed a 6.8 cu.ft. and replaced it with a 10.7 cu.ft with only minor cabinet mods. The new unit consumes less than 1/3 of the power that the 2way did while on electricity. I did also add 2 golf cart batteries and an inverter to keep things cold while traveling.

When the day comes that the fridge in my full time rig I will be replacing it with a similar home type unit.

I was reading through the complaint filed in the lawsuit filed against Dometic over this and I saw in there that they acquired Atwood which also makes RV type refrigerators.... the main difference between the Atwood models and the Dometic models is the cooling tonic used.... rather than hydrogen (explosive), ammonia (corrosive) and sodium chromate (a carcinogen), the Atwood models used a mix of helium-3 and helium-4 (both inert, nonflammable gases).

This is the one I would look for if you absolutely MUST have a 2 or 3 way refrigerator.... but since Dometic took them over some years ago they may or may not still be manufactured.

Worst case in the event of this failing is that you'll talk funny for a few minutes.
