Maybe it is easier for those of us who don't full-time, but carry as little valuable stuff on you as possible. When we do trips, the most individually, most universally valuable thing with my is probably my 4 year old Macbook laptop. I would be upset if it was stolen, but it is backed up online, so not the end of the world.

If you keep cash and passports with you, get a safe that is bolted through the floor or to the frame. Somewhere really hidden or really obvious, so obvious that nobody would look. I have thought that if I crossed the border, the cops would think my fuel tank access port in the floor was for smuggling, and would be too fixated on me opening that to look for anything else.

I painted my bus really sloppily on purpose. Runs, drips, etc. with brushed-on housepaint, exactly for this reason. It looks good from 20 feet, but once you get up close it looks horrendous. To the extent that someone might think that there is no reason to break in. We once had a park ranger profile us for this. She saw the school bus and was afraid to approach us because she said people with school buses done up like mine are usually a handful. Once she saw we were educated honest college kids, she was relieved.

People have asked if I was with the military, due to my army green bus which i think is funny, if you looked at my hair. Just painting your bus a certain color instills uncertainty and fear into some people.

Basically, a lot of security is psychology, rather than actual brute strength.

*nod* I don't lock any of my buses. I make 'em look like hell itself. ;) Who'd want to enter something like that?

But seriously, a lock is a good peace of mind type thing. Anyone that wants in is going to get in and most often they mess the **** up more by B&E than whatever was stolen (unless it's the whole bus) was worth.

If you have an old ugly yellow school bus I'm pretty sure that's enough of a deterrent already. *grin*
