I need to replace this rusty thing with a latch with a lock on it

Where my batteries are is a latch with no lock, and as u can see its a wee bit rusty. Is it possible to buy one of these to replace with a lock on the latch? If so, does anyone know where to find them?

I'm also very interested in installing a lock for the back latch if there's anyone who knows if this is possible? My bus is only accessible from the back once the doors are closed (you cannot open them again from the outside)

That battery door hatch has got lots of life left in it. I've heard on a different thread that a shot of WD-40 will fix that right up.

That latch is a pretty common item. You could pick one up from any junk yard where ever you see a bus. If you've got a choice of latches, consider a replacement that locks. I put a latch and hasp on my battery door. You know, because batteries get up and walk away sometimes while you're gone on a hike or something. I also get remarkably better gas mileage since I put a latch and hasp on the fuel door.

I basically want to replace it with a new latch that has a key lock on it.

That's not a bad price either. $17.94 each for between 2-9 latches. If you buy between 10-251 latches you can get them for only $15.81 each.

https://estore.dbroberts.com/partdet...OU64-50-411-50
10 … $12.19000E
50 … $9.87000E
100 … $8.73000E
500 … $7.86000E

64-50-411-50 Paddle Latches
Quantity $Price/Each
10 $12.19000
50 $9.87000
100 $8.73000
500 $7.86000

This appears to be like a Costco item. The more you get the cheaper it is.

At the first place you can get two at $17.94 ea. One for the battery door and one for the fuel door. That's less than I was expecting a locking paddle latch to cost. And you get two for about $36.

Well, it's $23.31 for one from Amazon or two latches for about $36.

These are black powder coated. Won't match.

The link I put up was the silver latch at 15 per from Amazon. Looks like it would work.
I was also looking at locking t-handle latches for my belly storage, but I was able to massage the ones I have to close on their own.

Honestly, the one you have looks like it could be cleaned up pretty well. Soak it in some marvel oil. Or try the electrolysis trick to dissolve the rust. I have seen that work on moving parts. Search YouTube and be amazed!

Thanks, I see those now. My mistake, I did a parts number search on Amazon for that OEM one I turned up. I like the shiny ones. Lots of T-handle ones too.

Yikes!

Is there a stainless steel alternative that will fit? As far as I'm concerned, nothing goes on the outside of my bus unless it's stainless or aluminum - I don't tolerate rust! Sometimes stainless doesn't cost much more than pot metal or plain steel. Does West Marine have something?

Actually Amazon has the most choices at the best prices, and they are the ones that have the shiny locking latches.

It's ok to buy your bus a little bling. I got a pair of hummingbird feeders that look like earrings hanging on the mirrors.

The direct replacement locking paddle latch is also made in SS but more $$ of course.

I raided an old bus for a battery box door and the latch on it has a lock that was obviously added later. It's one of those truck tool box locks. My fuel door has one as well. If you can't find one with a built-in lock at a good price or you manage to fix the rusty one, you could easily add a lock. If you buy a bunch of locks with the same numbers on them you could even have them all use the same key. When I got my tool boxes for my bus I found out that their key also works for my fuel door, which i previously had not had a key for.
