that bus would be worth the price, especially when you think about the fuel you'll be saving.

it's gotta get over 10 mpg @ 60 mph. Phills bus has the same setup but the AT545 i think? and he gets at least 10 mpg when wer're cruising 60.

if i had that bus this past summer i would have only spent $1,400 in fuel to drive to burningman and back instead of the @2,800 that ate a hole in my wallet!

The fuel injection would have changed everything from the spark plug wires to the disty to the TB to the coil, but who am I to say. I'm still a new-b on this board. However, I have been running efi on my IH Scout with a combine 392 for the last two years. But as it stands, we still dont know if the $400 worth of ignition parts fixed his problem.

Bear with me guys. I still have not worked on it since I got home from the road.
Too many irons in the fire. But I have to do it tomorrow,
because Thursday I take it on a trip!
Sure appreciate all the input!

I will respectfully admit that I don't know a whole lot about EFI swaps on IHC motors. I guess I'm just used to my junk. Much of the toyota stuff swaps from carbed to EFI applications and back again including the dizzy, coil, etc. I will still contend that an EFI swap is more work than just changing out what he bought though.

Old #35 dies happy

.

I accept the blame. I probably over-revved it going 65 MPH. It
sounded so happy at that speed! And I had it to 65 on the way
home when I bought it, so that would explain the trouble at the
smog shop. Bent valves. I suppose one valve on #1 was bent just
enough to close at cranking speed for a good compression test,
but not at running speed.

I have no idea about RPMs; the tach did not work.

We took it on a 1000 mile trip last weekend. On the way home,
it suddenly developed a slight ticking noise, and ran a bit rougher,
and would not idle at all. And it made a puffing sound thru the
carburetor. I just pulled the valve cover and found the expected
"taco'ed" push rod.

Lesson learned.

On the trip, we actually learned all we needed. Old #35 is too small.
So now I am actively shopping for a 40 foot flat nose -- probably a
BB TC2000. It even has a name already: Millicent -- after a lady we
met at BM who has such a bus and gave us a tour. 35 feet of usable space!

So there is no problem. We paid $250,- for it. (I can use the MSD hot
rod ignition parts on some other vehicle.)

Thanks to all for the input. The death certificate will show that Old
#35 died happy, singing like a freight train and hauling four
partying Kinetic Sculpture Racers and pulling a trailer and just
living it up.

let me know where you'll be parking if you go to bm 07. This will be year number 4 for me.

Yes, I missed finding you this year! I will have a theme camp next
year, on the theme of Kinetic Sculpture Racing. But I don't know yet
if it will be an Official Theme Camp or an informal one. And of course,
I will have a new bus -- probably a TC-2000.

While I'm at it; thanks for the suggestion above about TC-2000s in
Minnesota. But that's too far away, and I cannot help but think that
rust would be an issue. Around here there is simply NO rust.

Again, thanks everyone for helping me brainstorm!

No problem. If you do end up getting desperate, let me know and I will go talk to Tim and find out exactly what he has with what options and for what price. Rust is a scary thing, but would you believe that my bus is essentially rust free? Minnesota recently changed the laws somewhat. It used to be that buses had to be replaced after X number of years, but now they just get inspected. Since a bus is a big investment, you'll find a lot of schools keeping them in heated garages and washing them regularly to try and get a few extra years out of them. Of course this wasn't the case in my district where last year they had the rear wheel well of a TC2000 fall out with students on the bus.

Sometimes I feel almost guilty about the rust issue. Around here, the
only vehicles that get any rust at all are the ones that are within
wave-spray distance of the Pacific. Even in rainy Oregon, there is
little rust inland. My 1981 bus came from Corvallis, Oregon, and it
is absolutely free of structural rust. Here in California, we have
even less! We have earthquakes and wildfires that consume our
homes instead.

To my amazement, my New England bus isn't rusty except for the very bottom of the rear emergency door (I replaced the door). Thank you, ThomasBuilt & their galvanized bodies.
