Insulation Board: Polyiso or Foam?

We are going to do our best to insulate our bus including the ceiling. I've come across what seems to be a good deal on some R-Max insulation boards (4x8 sheets 1.5in thick for 12.50 each), but I have no experience working with it. For the ceiling I'm planning to insulate it with board insulation by cutting "v" grooves to allow the board to bend to fit the roof contour. (then use the foam in a can to fill in the gaps.) I'm sure I can do that with the foam board (pink/blue/green foam not styrofoam). Anyone know if you can cut the polyiso the same way and it still hold together?

Re: Insulation Board: Polyiso or Foam?

I ended up using R-max as well--I don't think the "R" value is as high as with the blue or pink board though. The 1" thick board will bend enough to conform to the round roof lines of my bus but I don't think the 1 1/2" will. I used two layers. I will be interested to know if spray foam is compatable with R-max as that would make life simple in the areas where the 1" foam won't work.

Re: Insulation Board: Polyiso or Foam?

The R-Max has an r-value of 6.4 for 1" thick, where as the blue foam board has an r-value of 5 for 1"....so r-value wise the polyiso would be better.

Re: Insulation Board: Polyiso or Foam?

Thats great news as I have 2, 2" layers all over. I must admit I didn't think the "R" value was that high. I was going with what the Home Depot folks posted and that was "R" 5 for 1". Do you recall where you found your rating? Thanks, Jack

Re: Insulation Board: Polyiso or Foam?

I know with the board insulation that when you layer the boards, you just add up the r-value of each layer. R value of 1/2" polyiso is 3.2, so 1" would be 6.4. Here is a link Lowes that lists the specifications of 1" R-max insulation board
