yes because these days anymore engineers have never been out in the field...

people ask me how i could design, program (write the code) and build a telecom system that is so reliable and so straightforward to use.. because no one else ever has.. my response is that I started out installing, repairing, upgrading, and doing tech support in the real world rather than with my nose in a book.. I saw first hand what failed, new what techs needed to make our jobs easier, etc..

farmers are the same way.. thinga break and ya gotta fix em.. even if the parts stores are closed or theres no product made.. (you go make something).. ie you and your bus - perfect example.. they just dont make stuff.. so you adapt.. make your own parts, etc...

I used a Chore-Boy and great stuff to fill a hole in my friends' house last year. No rats or mice have gotten through it since.

Could not agree more. I'll take practical experience over theory & "book lernin' any day.

I used to do a lot of ad work for Schlumberger. They lead everyone on planet Earth in the highly competitive and very technical world of oil field logging...predicting where and how to find oil.

They recruited the top 1% of the top 1% of engineers from universities around the world and paid the biggest starting salaries to match. But...when it came time for these folks to go to work, they did NOT get an air conditioned office. They sent every one of their new people out to work on a rig for a few years. They understood the difference between just being smart...and being savvy.

They have virtually NO competition because of their people. And there were two statistics that supported the wisdom of such madness...

Schlumberger has logged over 90% of all the oil wells drilled on Earth over the past 100 years...and...for the past 70 or so they have been the most profitable company in the world in terms of ROI.

Smart is good. Smart and real world experienced is tough to beat.
