It's a good idea as far as handling. It will also sit more level. It isn't crucial, but is beneficial. My generator is heavy, so I will keep my tanks on the opposite side.
I think it's more important to keep the weight back over the rear dual wheels. The front single wheels have the engine already.
Take empty bus to the Cat scales to see how your weight is distributed.
