Lead Paint
So my '64 has lead based paint. How scared of this should I be? Anyone with experience? I was thinking of just scotch padding it with a water hose, but I'm wondering how much I need to protect myself. How concerned should I be? How hard is it to get lead poisoning? I'm not planning on eating paint chips.

well david i'll bet a lot of the guys are afraid to touch this one.
If it were me I would ask my local hazmat team on how to handle it.
They are connected to the fire station and are there to answer your questions as well.
are you sure that it is lead paint? Or is it that old acrylic enamel that was used on industrial vehicles at the time
before I get my panties in a wad I would have it tested first.
And if it were me I would use a biodegradable chemical stripper. resperator gloves and paint suite.
But do what hazmat tells you to do.
stripper will trap it in a solid form instead of putting it in the air or in your lungs

Honestly As long as you are not eating it I would not worry about it. And even then it is small children that it really effects. Lean paint is really way overhyped. I mean come on we had used it for hundreds of years we are still here. Like I said just dont let kids eat the shiny paint chips.

Yellow would be a very common color to have lead in given lead's yellow nature in certain compounds, correct?

wear a good 3-m resporator for autobody use. there are 3 sizes make sure it fits tight a paint sock over your haedand a paint suite and you should be all right eye protection sand away, I put a big fan to my left or right to blow the dust away from me
the resperator fitlers particualte down 3 microns. it just has to fit tight
be safe I do body work for a living its important to save your lungs
many people in my profession die young or have neurological problems or cancer.
its no joke
its important even if your just scuffing the surface.

look I don't want to sound bossy but in the last 2yrs I have lost 6 of my friends that are in my profession.
And I hae had two heart attack myself and minor neurological damage that will only get worse with time
paint thinners and hardeners are to blame. I don't smoke but I have lost about 16% of my lung capacity
I'm 41 and have done bodywork since I was 14
was not as smart aboout it then

If it's any consolation my buddy who just got done with schooling for autobody said that the single most stressed thing there was proper protection of yourself....from day one to the last day. Heck, he's even taught me a thing or two about safety equipment.

there is only two things I really preach on
1. safety
2.craftsmanship do the best you can and you will have no regrets
Its cheapers to fail and learn how to do it right the next time, even if it costs twice the money because you have gained value in experience
