looking for 4 way flasher/turn signal relay

Yesterday while driving my bus around I noticed I had lost my turn signals and 4 way flashers. After talking with the local school bus mechanic he suggested I replace the flasher control (relay). He said on my older bus (1992) when you lose both signals and 4 ways, its the relay. He mentioned it happens regularly and it would be a round chrome unit that I can pick up at napa.

So I'm poking around the electrical panel area below the drivers side window and for the life of me I can not find what he is talking about. I have zero chrome bits in there. I found one round looking relay up in the top left when facing the panel but according to the wiring diagram that seems like it would be for the windshield wipers. (I'm going to disconnect it and try the wipers just to confirm)

So I'm wondering if anyone has some ideas.

Thanks.

Re: looking for 4 way flasher/turn signal relay

when u turn on the key do u hear that relay kick in ???because every thing runs off that and if it does not work, than nothing works,so if u need one pm me,i have a blue bird parts catalog andi send u the replace number, the reson i know this is mine when out too.and they cost about $49.00,that relay operates all the the lights, so check to see if it clicks when u turn the key on ,,,,no click no juice....

Re: looking for 4 way flasher/turn signal relay

Thanks keith.

I went and checked.... I did not hear a relay click, just my low air warning. I do have headlights, running lights and brake lights. All confirmed both by the school bus light indicator thing above the drivers head and also just by actually looking at the lights.

Also confirmed that the relay I thought would involve the wipers, does not.

What you need is what I need--a wiring diagram!

On my '84 BB the turn signals are not a part of the 4-way flasher, nor, as far as I can tell, are they fed thru the solenoid (i.e. round "chrome" relay) under the driver's left forearm rest.

Re: looking for 4 way flasher/turn signal relay

Yes a real wiring diagram would help.

I do have the build sheet wiring diagram that came with the bus. It is real basic and includes most items but of course the section I need has an astrick by it and tells me to look at another diagram, which I do not have. I found the owners manual, spec sheet, warranty cards and original registration all pushed to the back of the cubby above the door.

I have an email into BB asking them to send me a real diagram. So far the guy asked for my VIN and said he would get back with me. I'm holding my breath. I'll let you know if I get anything.

The mechanic at the school yard did say up to about 2002 the turn signal and hazards were on the same relay. Which in my case I guess would make sense given that I lost both at the same time.
With that being said, here is what I'm looking at:

Judging by the amount of wiring that is cut or spliced I'm guessing that the mechanics have changed things up a bit.

On a side note, there was a square chrome item directly under the arm rest and I removed it. It was the emergency door/window buzzer.

Thanks again for the help.

What I mistakenly called 4 way flashers is the 8 way flashers. The hazard and turn signals are on the same circuit (my bus).
That rectangular silver relay would be my WAG for a turn signal flasher relay.

You sure got a heck of a lot more wires than my '84. Good luck.

You got that right!

In my case, that rectangle silver relay in the picture is the horn relay.

I think I'll be headed back over to the bus barn mechanic tomorrow.

Re: looking for 4 way flasher/turn signal relay

see the black bar with all the fuse tie together ???follow the main lead off that and that should go to the relay and from the relay to your key switch,it round and has two big wires to with to small wires,it about the size of a silver dollor, the relay...its the bar that runs crossways, not up and down.take a test light and check the fuse;s too,iam loking at your bar,u want to test the fuse;s on the bottom side of them. and has far has a wireing digam, forget it,i have an 94 bird they can only go back to 2000 yr,so good luck and i use to work for them,

Re: looking for 4 way flasher/turn signal relay

Kieth thanks for the info. I will go check that now!

As far as the wiring diagrams..... email BlueBird directly. There is a contact form on their site you can use to ask for the wiring diagrams. Either I got lucky or they changed a policy because it only took 1 day and my VIN and they hooked me up with both the chassis and body wiring diagrams in pdf.

Anyone that wants to take a look, PM me your email and I will forward along the copy I received.

*edit: The chassis diagram he sent me is from 1988. The body diagram is 1991. He even took the time to point out the circuits I needed to look at to track down my turn signals/hazards.

Re: looking for 4 way flasher/turn signal relay

keith,
I checked the circuit breakers. The two that involved the turn signals had power on both sides. I checked the rest of them just for the hell of it and about 95% of them had power on both sides.
I have 3 black bars, two horizontal and one vertical. The turn signals are using the bottom horizontal bar and the only vertical bar to the left. You can barley see the horizontal bar in the picture.

I followed the main black lead from the fuse bar and it goes to a stud on the right side. (stud is to the right of the silver square horn relay) There is no relay in this side panel that has to do with the ignition switch. Not to mention everything works just fine except the turn signals and hazard lights.

Honestly this is getting real stupid. It should not be this difficult. We're talking about a turn signal/hazard relay. Every automobile has one as far as I'm concerned.

Somewhere along the line someone must have either re wired the turn signals and so it is not factory looking or the relay is in some other area. I've looked all around this panel, under the switches in the drivers left arm area and behind the drivers side wipers. Nothing, not a damn thing.

There is one 2 prong round relay that has an inline 20 amp fuse going to it. I'm not 100% sure what it is for. It is in the upper left of the picture, right above the weldon flasher control unit thingy.

Re: looking for 4 way flasher/turn signal relay

I get 0.10 when the flashers are on. 0 when they are off.

I ran down to napa and replaced that relay. No change.
