Re: Manual Trans Options for B700s?

I will look for my manual after work and post up what I see listed there. I don't recall any of the factory options being overdrive transmissions, but that doesn't mean you can't put on in there.

Re: Manual Trans Options for B700s?

in an older ford i'd put my money on a new process or borg warner trans or possibly a clark 5 speed, newe process is now new venture gears/transmission, dana owns spicer and eaton owns clark and fuller trans. eaton and spicer are in some sort of joint venture with the current roadrangers.

the big limiting factor in trans selection is the bellhousing if you have a bellhousing with the large sae opening and bolt pattern you should be able to fit just about any large truck transmission, if you have an automotive style small opening bellhousing you may need to contact someone like advanced adapters to help you match up a trans and bellhousing, clutch discs and pilot/throwout bearings can be changed to match up trans input shafts if they are the right length.

Re: Manual Trans Options for B700s?

Your 4+1 really would be a true 5 speed unless you are looking for an overdrive (which I think you are). Wouldn't you know I can't find my manual, but I can tell you that there weren't any overdrives listed. However, an RT6613 is listed. Theoretically an RTO6613 (or similar) could be put in its place giving you 13 gears and overdrive (the RT6613 is direct drive). Those transmissions are actually 15 speeds, but have two overlapping ratios. Unfortunately I don't think all those gears in the basement are all that useful unless you combined it with a really tall ring and pinion ratio. Still, having a range AND splitter switch would be cool.

Re: Manual Trans Options for B700s?

the clark 5 speeds came with all kinds of ratio's/splits depending on the application, the new venture nv4500 is a granny low and a 27% od in 5th with 4th being 1:1, they also make a 6 speed with better splits and overdrive.

your next moove is to crawl under the buss and determine which bellhousing you have and or if you can locate a large opening bellhousing, then try to find a trans that will work, 6,7,or9 speed.

Re: Manual Trans Options for B700s?

You have the same gearbox I do (also a B-700 gasser), I'd bet: the venerable Spicer 5-speed.

You're pretty much out of luck on overdrive...but what's your rear axle ratio? You want a 4.11 or 4.30 (with the usual 22.5" wheels and 10R or 11R tires) for highway driving and a direct 5th gear...any taller and the engine won't pull the gears.
